KKR playoff qualification scenario explained after GT defeat; what they need to qualify

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are going through a poor run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season after another defeat. The three-time IPL champions are currently at the bottom of the points table with just one point from six matches, which has put their playoff hopes under serious pressure.

Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, April 17. Chasing 180, Shubman Gill scored 86 runs off 50 balls to guide his team to victory. The Titans moved to fourth place after their third consecutive victory.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and opted to bat. The visitors got off to a poor start, losing three wickets in the powerplay. Cameron Green was the only bright spot, scoring 79 runs off 55 balls to help the team post a fighting total of 180.

Kagiso Rabada starred with the ball for Gujarat Titans, taking three wickets. Mohammed Siraj and Ashok Sharma chipped in with two wickets each.

During the run chase, Shubman Gill scored 86 runs off 50 balls, including eight boundaries and four sixes. Jos Buttler was the second-highest scorer for Gujarat Titans with 25 runs off 15 balls. For Kolkata Knight Riders, Varun Chakaravarthy picked up two wickets.

After this five-wicket loss, Kolkata Knight Riders remain at the bottom of the points table. They have just one point from six matches, which came from a washed-out game against Punjab Kings (PBKS), leaving them in a difficult position.

Kolkata Knight Riders still have a mathematical chance to reach the playoffs. They must win all their remaining eight league matches to secure qualification, which would take them to 17 points and keep them in strong contention for a top-four spot.

Reaching 17 points is the safest scenario for qualification, as teams usually finish in the top four with 16-18 points. Winning all remaining matches will also reduce their dependence on other results and avoid complicated net run rate scenarios.
