Pat Cummins Cleared for IPL Return, Eyes Late April Comeback

Pat Cummins has received medical clearance to rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking a significant milestone in his recovery from a persistent back injury. The SRH captain is now targeting a return to action in late April, with his sights set on the clash against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on April 25.

Medical Green Light After Sydney Scans

Cummins, who played only one match during the 2023-24 international season due to a lumbar bone stress injury, returned to Sydney earlier this month for scheduled follow-up scans. The results confirmed that the injury has fully healed, paving the way for his return to competitive cricket.

Initially diagnosed in August following discomfort during Australia’s tour of the West Indies, the stress fracture had sidelined Cummins for months, including the entire home Test summer apart from the Adelaide Ashes Test. There, he made a strong impact with six wickets as Australia retained the urn.

Missed T20 World Cup, Now Focused on IPL

Although Cummins was named in Australia’s preliminary squad for the T20 World Cup, the recovery timeline proved too tight for a comeback. The IPL, which started shortly after, also came too soon — forcing him to delay joining SRH at the tournament’s outset.

Now, with the injury behind him, Cummins confirmed his return plans via social media, replying to a family holiday post that he’s set to fly back to India on Friday. His potential return match against Rajasthan Royals would be a boost for a side currently sitting fourth in the points table with two wins from five games.

SRH Finding Form in Captain’s Absence

In Cummins’ absence, Ishan Kishan has led Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite a disappointing start — including a collapse from 105/0 in the powerplay to losing by 30 runs against Punjab Kings — SRH bounced back with a dominant 57-run win over Rajasthan Royals.

Head coach Daniel Vettori highlighted the continuity of leadership, noting: “We’re fortunate enough that Pat has been around the group and he’s been able to have conversations with Ishan about his captaincy style.”

Balancing Workload Ahead of Packed International Calendar

Cummins now faces a demanding stretch on the international front. Australia is scheduled to play at least 20 Test matches from August through next July, including high-profile series against Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, India, and England. The 150th anniversary Test at the MCG and a possible World Test Championship final in June add further stakes.

SRH’s careful management of Cummins will be crucial in keeping him fresh for the long haul. His teammates are also navigating comebacks: Josh Hazlewood has returned for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, being strategically rested after his first match before delivering a quality performance (1 for 20) against Lucknow Super Giants.

Meanwhile, fellow Australian Test spearhead Mitchell Starc remains on the sidelines, recovering from shoulder and elbow injuries sustained during the Big Bash League and yet to link up with Delhi Capitals.

A Welcome Boost for Sunrisers

Cummins’ return not only strengthens SRH’s pace attack but also brings proven leadership and tactical insight. As the IPL enters its crucial middle phase, having their captain back at full fitness could be the catalyst Sunrisers need to climb the standings and make a deep playoff run.

For fans and fantasy league managers alike, the news of Cummins’ comeback is a welcome development — a reminder that sometimes, patience and proper recovery make all the difference.
