Bangladesh Rely on Fresh Talent for NZ T20Is
Bangladesh has opted to rest key members of its pace attack for the first two T20 Internationals against New Zealand, paving the way for emerging talents Ripon Mondol and uncapped Abdul Gaffar Saqlain to step into the national squad. The decision, driven by workload management and strategic planning, highlights Bangladesh Cricket Board’s focus on balancing player fitness with opportunities for domestic performers.
Pace Trio Rested Amid Busy Schedule
Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and rising fast bowler Nahid Rana have been rested for the initial matches of the three-game T20I series. With Nahid Rana set to feature in the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, the selectors emphasized the need to manage his workload carefully. Taskin Ahmed, a consistent performer across formats, has also been given a short break after featuring heavily in Bangladesh’s recent ODI campaigns.
Chief selector Habibul Bashar confirmed the decision, stating: “Rana obviously needs the rest with the Test series (against Pakistan) coming up.” The move reflects a growing trend of rotational policies within the national setup, aimed at preserving player longevity.
Ripon Mondol’s Rise as Death Overs Specialist
Ripon Mondol, a right-arm medium pacer, has earned a recall after a consistent run in domestic cricket. Having represented Bangladesh in three T20Is during the 2023 Asian Games, Mondol has since developed a reputation for delivering in high-pressure situations—particularly at the death.
His performance in the 2024 Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) one-day tournament underlined his value, where he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker with eight wickets in a competitive field. Bashar praised Mondol’s dual ability: “We can utilise his ability with the new ball and his death bowling has also been quite noticeable.”
Saqlain: The Allrounder with X-Factor Potential
Abdul Gaffar Saqlain, a 28-year-old bowling allrounder, makes his first appearance in a senior national squad. Known for his ability to bowl effective hard lengths and mix up variations, Saqlain adds depth to the bowling attack. But his value doesn’t stop there—he’s also recognized for his explosive batting.
The selectors view him as a potential T20I utility player, capable of contributing with both ball and bat. “Saqlain could be our bowling allrounder option,” Bashar said. “He has also shown good form recently.” His inclusion marks a reward for sustained domestic performances.
Squad Changes and Series Outlook
Jaker Ali and Mahidul Islam have been left out of the squad since the last T20I series against Ireland in December. The revised 15-member squad otherwise remains largely unchanged, with Litton Das leading the side and wicketkeeping duties.
The first two T20Is will be hosted in Chattogram on April 27 and 29, offering Mondol and Saqlain prime opportunities to prove themselves on home soil. The series concludes with the third T20I in Dhaka on May 2.
