Pakistan Cricket Board Entrusts Sarfaraz Ahmed with Coaching Mantle
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially announced a reshuffle in its leadership hierarchy, appointing former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach for the men’s national Test team. This strategic appointment comes ahead of Pakistan’s crucial two-match Test series in Bangladesh, scheduled to commence next month. Sarfaraz, who recently transitioned from an active playing career to a management role, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of leadership to the dressing room.
Sarfaraz’s transition into coaching has been swift and successful. Prior to this senior team appointment, he served as a mentor-manager for the Pakistan Under-19 squad, guiding them to a prestigious title at the Asia Cup. His ability to nurture young talent while maintaining the tactical discipline required for the longest format of the game made him a standout candidate for the PCB’s selection committee.
A High-Profile Coaching Support Staff
To bolster Sarfaraz’s leadership, the PCB has also confirmed the appointments of two former Test stalwarts to the coaching panel. Asad Shafiq, known for his technical prowess and middle-order resilience during his playing days, has been named the batting coach. Joining him is Umar Gul, one of Pakistan’s most celebrated fast bowlers, who will take over the responsibilities of bowling coach. This trio of former players represents a significant investment in home-grown expertise, aiming to provide the current squad with insights from those who have succeeded at the highest levels of international cricket.
ICC World Test Championship: The Bangladesh Challenge
The upcoming tour is of paramount importance as it forms part of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Every point is vital in the race for the final, and Pakistan will be looking to secure a clean sweep on Bangladeshi soil. The schedule for the series has been finalized as follows:
- First Test: May 8–12 at the Sher-i-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Dhaka.
- Second Test: May 16–20 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet.
Playing in Bangladesh presents unique challenges, particularly the spin-friendly conditions and the heat. The coaching staff will be tasked with preparing the players for these specific environmental and technical hurdles.
Squad Composition and New Faces
Leading the side on the field will be Shan Masood, who continues his tenure as Test captain. The squad selected for the tour is a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers. In a bold move, the selectors have included four uncapped players who have shown exceptional form in domestic circuits: Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais, and Muhammad Ghazi Ghori. Their inclusion signals the PCB’s commitment to refreshing the Test roster and testing the bench strength in away conditions.
The full Pakistan Test squad for the tour includes: Shan Masood (captain), Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais, Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
Preparation and Training Regimes
Preparation is already underway for several members of the squad. Currently, five players—Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Noman Ali, and Sajid Khan—are participating in an intensive Test cricket training camp in Lahore. This camp focuses on endurance and technical refinement before the full squad assembles.
The entire team is scheduled to meet in Karachi on April 27 for a comprehensive training camp that will run until May 1. This final phase of preparation will allow Sarfaraz Ahmed and his coaching staff to implement their tactical blueprints. The team will depart for Bangladesh on May 2. It is noted that players currently engaged in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will join the Karachi camp immediately after their respective franchises’ campaigns conclude. Finalists of the tournament are expected to arrive in camp by May 3, just before the team heads to Dhaka.
With a revamped coaching staff led by the charismatic Sarfaraz Ahmed and a squad hungry for WTC points, Pakistan cricket fans are eagerly anticipating a dominant performance in the upcoming series.
