[CRK] Miraz Calls for Better Match Finishes After Bangladesh’s ODI Loss to New Zealand

Bangladesh Fall Short by 26 Runs in Series Opener
Bangladesh’s campaign in the three-match ODI series got off to a rocky start as they fell to a 26-run defeat against New Zealand in the first match at Mirpur. The hosts were unable to complete a successful chase despite promising contributions with the bat, leaving captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz reflecting on missed opportunities.
New Zealand Set a Competitive Total
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, New Zealand posted a total of 247 runs. While not an overwhelming score on a batting-friendly wicket, it proved enough thanks to disciplined bowling and sharper fielding in the second innings. Bangladesh, in response, were bowled out for 221, falling just short in their pursuit.
Miraz: Close, But Not Enough
Addressing reporters after the match, skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz acknowledged his teams strong bowling performance but pointed to avoidable mistakes in the field. I think we bowled really well and 270 [248] is not difficult to chase on this wicket, Miraz stated. It’s a great wicket and our bowlers did very well. If we had taken two catches, definitely we would have kept them under 200 runs. So, it’s a little mistake from our team.
Despite the loss, Miraz emphasized the positives, particularly the disciplined bowling unit and the fighting knocks from Saif Hassan, Litton Das, and Towhid Hridoy. I think we have a lot of positives as well, he added.
Shoriful Steps In for Injured Mustafizur
In a late change to the playing XI, Shoriful Islam replaced Mustafizur Rahman, who was ruled out due to discomfort in his right knee. Miraz praised Shorifuls composure under pressure, noting the challenge of stepping in with minimal preparation. It’s a great opportunity for him. Last minute Mustafizur got injured and after that it will be difficult for any player because the preparation-wise he didn’t know that he is playing this one. Fortunately, he came and he bowled really well and after a long time he came and bowled.
Chase Falters Despite Key Partnerships
While Bangladesh’s middle order showed promise, particularly through the efforts of Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy, the innings lacked the finishing touch. Miraz highlighted the importance of closing matches strongly. I think back-to-back two wickets is always the key for the opponent’s team. And the way Litton and Towhid batted was brilliant. And after that, Towhid and Afif.
He continued, Definitely we had to finish well, otherwise we cannot win because in the chase always making big partnership helps. If we made a big partnership, definitely we would have won this one.
Miraz acknowledged the teams determination, saying, I think all players are excited and everybody wanted to win and sometimes it can happen.
Next Chance on April 20
The second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand will take place on April 20, once again at the same venue in Mirpur. With the series now at 1-0, the pressure is on the hosts to regroup quickly and turn intent into execution.
