Bangladesh Handed ICC Fine Despite ODI Comeback Win

After a commanding performance to level the ODI series against New Zealand, Bangladesh’s celebrations were slightly dampened by an off-field penalty. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined the entire Bangladesh squad 10% of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second ODI.

Victory Tarnished by Over-Rate Offense

Coming off a loss in the first ODI, Bangladesh bounced back strongly in the second match with a well-rounded display. Their all-round performance kept fans hopeful for a series win. However, the post-match report brought unwelcome news.

The ICC confirmed the fine in an official statement, citing that Bangladesh failed to bowl their 50 overs within the allotted time. They were two overs short—a breach governed by Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for minimum over-rate offences.

How the Penalty Was Calculated

According to ICC regulations, each over short of the target results in a 5% fine of the players’ match fees. As Bangladesh fell two overs behind schedule, the penalty was set at 10%. Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz was cited as primarily responsible, as per standard protocol for on-field leadership accountability.

  • Offence: Slow over-rate (2 overs short)
  • Penalty: 10% of match fees per player
  • Governing Rule: ICC Code of Conduct Article 2.22
  • Captain: Mehidy Hasan Miraz (accepted charge)

No Formal Hearing Required

The charge was reported by the match officials: on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Gazi Sohel, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul. Since Miraz promptly accepted the offence, no formal disciplinary hearing was necessary—a common practice when captains concede the breach without dispute.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenge teams face in managing time efficiently during ODIs, especially in high-pressure situations where field adjustments, injuries, or delays between overs can accumulate.

Focus Shifts to Series Decider in Chattogram

With the series now level at 1-1, all eyes turn to the final and decisive ODI. The third and last match will be played in Chattogram on April 23 at 11:00 AM (Bangladesh time). The venue is expected to draw a passionate crowd as Bangladesh aims to clinch the series on home soil.

While the fine is a minor setback, the team’s focus will remain on maintaining their momentum and discipline—both on the scoreboard and in over-rate management. A strong finish could not only secure series glory but also reinforce their reputation for professionalism.

As the countdown to the final ODI begins, Bangladesh will look to put the penalty behind them and deliver another performance worthy of victory—this time without disciplinary consequences.
