The Controversy Surrounding Riyan Parag’s Captaincy

In a recent appearance on Sportstar’s ‘Insight Edge’ podcast, former India batter and prominent cricket analyst Sanjay Manjrekar did not mince his words regarding the Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) leadership hierarchy. The franchise’s decision to appoint Riyan Parag as the full-time captain for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has come under intense scrutiny from the veteran commentator.

Manjrekar’s Allegations of Favoritism

Manjrekar expressed deep skepticism regarding the trajectory of Parag’s career within the RR setup. He suggested that the management has shown a level of support that borders on favoritism, noting that Parag has been gifted leadership roles despite a lack of consistent output on the field. ‘I don’t think from a cricketing point of view, it makes any sense at all,’ Manjrekar remarked, adding that the rewards bestowed upon the youngster seem disproportionate to the hard work actually displayed during his tenure.

A Look at the Numbers

Since joining the Rajasthan Royals as a 17-year-old in 2019, Riyan Parag has remained a staple of the squad. However, his statistics paint a picture of a player who has struggled to find consistency. In 94 matches, Parag has amassed 1,773 runs at an average of 25.69 and a strike rate of 142. Perhaps most telling is his tally of only eight fifties in seven years, with a career-high score of 90.

While the 2024 season marked a significant high point for the youngster—where he scored 573 runs at an average of 52 and earned an India cap—his performance has dipped significantly since. In the current 2026 campaign, Parag has managed just 207 runs in 10 matches at a modest average of 20. His recent 90-run knock stands as his only fifty of the current season.

The ‘Arrogance’ Factor and Self-Confidence

Beyond the statistics, Manjrekar touched upon the psychological aspect of Parag’s presence on the pitch. He noted that Parag possesses an ‘unbelievable self-confidence’ that can sometimes be perceived as arrogance. ‘Even when he was not delivering, if you saw him in the field, the kind of stuff that he did. It was just almost arrogance for somebody who was struggling to fit in or deliver,’ said Manjrekar.

The analyst identified a specific pattern in Parag’s batting: the tendency to play sensational, eye-catching shots early in his innings, followed by a failure to consolidate. ‘He would come in and hit a couple of cracking shots, and you would be blown away. And then the next ball he’s playing the same shot and getting out. That is his MO,’ Manjrekar explained.

The RR Leadership Dilemma

The transition in captaincy has been a major talking point for RR supporters. After Sanju Samson served as the long-term leader, his departure for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) paved the way for Parag to take the helm. Despite the criticism surrounding his individual form, it is worth noting that under Parag’s leadership, the Rajasthan Royals currently sit in a relatively comfortable fourth position on the points table with six wins in 10 outings.

As RR prepares to face the Gujarat Titans in Jaipur on May 9, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the young captain. Whether Parag can silence his critics with consistent performances or if the management’s backing will continue to be a subject of debate remains the primary narrative of RR’s 2026 season. For now, the cricketing world waits to see if the faith placed in the youngster by the Royals will eventually pay off in the form of silverware.
