Axar Patel Praises Sanju Samson’s Match-Winning Knock After DC vs CSK Clash
A Night of Frustration for Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium
In a contest defined by tactical challenges and pitch difficulty, the Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered their sixth defeat of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The team, currently struggling to find momentum, has now lost four of their last five matches, placing their playoff aspirations in a precarious position. Following the match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), skipper Axar Patel faced the difficult task of explaining where his team lost their grip on proceedings.
The Strategic Gamble
The night began with Axar Patel winning the toss and electing to bat first. In hindsight, the decision to bat on a surface that proved remarkably difficult for stroke-making at the start of the innings appeared to be a significant hurdle. Delhi Capitals struggled to build partnerships, losing wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings. Ultimately, they could only manage a total of 155, a score that would prove insufficient given the quality of the opposition’s middle order.
The Sanju Samson Factor
While the Delhi bowlers did manage to pick up a few early wickets during the CSK run chase, they were unable to navigate the challenge posed by Sanju Samson. The Chennai star showcased immense composure, remaining unbeaten on 87 off just 52 deliveries. His ability to anchor the innings while others struggled made him the difference-maker, effectively spoiling the night for the Delhi Capitals and their home fans.
Samson’s incredible form against the Delhi outfit this season has been historic. With his latest knock, he has ascended into the elite company of players with the highest aggregates against a single opponent in an IPL league stage:
- 209: Virat Kohli vs Gujarat Lions (2016)
- 206: KL Rahul vs Mumbai Indians (2022)
- 202: Sanju Samson vs Delhi Capitals (2026)
- 196: Chris Gayle vs Pune Warriors India (2013)
- 193: KL Rahul vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2020)
Samson’s performance this season has been a study in contrasts, highlighting his immense value to CSK. In matches that resulted in victories, he has accumulated 362 runs across five innings at a staggering average of 181 and a strike rate of 178.32, whereas his output in defeats paints a vastly different picture.
Axar Patel’s Tactical Assessment
Addressing the media after the game, Axar Patel acknowledged the difficulty of the pitch but remained firm in his assessment that his team was slightly short of a competitive total. “Obviously, the way the wicket was playing in the first innings, I felt that 155 was a good score. But since we were playing with eight batters, I felt we were about 10-15 runs short,” the DC skipper admitted.
Patel emphasized that the pitch was deceptive. While it appeared to settle down, the uneven nature of the surface made it incredibly difficult for batters who were not already set. “I feel it got a little better, but I think the difference was made by the set batter. When a batter is well set, it feels like there is nothing in the pitch, but I still feel there was something in it,” he explained.
Describing the technical challenges his team faced, the captain added, “For a new batter coming in, it was not easy. The length balls were holding up, sometimes staying low, and occasionally even bouncing after holding. So, I feel it was very difficult for new batters. But when set batters were playing, it looked easier.”
Looking Ahead
For the Delhi Capitals, the road ahead is narrow. The loss to CSK brings the spotlight back to the team’s qualification scenario for the 2026 playoffs. As the tournament enters its final stages, DC must find a way to capitalize on starts and adapt more quickly to varying pitch conditions if they hope to turn their season around and climb the points table.
