A New Era at the Home of Cricket

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has officially announced that Julian Metherell, a long-standing member and influential figure in the cricketing world, will assume the role of President starting October 1, 2026. Metherell, who succeeds the outgoing president Ed Smith, brings with him a wealth of financial acumen and a profound connection to the sport that spans four decades.

A Distinguished Career Beyond the Boundary

Metherell is far from a stranger to high-stakes leadership. His professional background is firmly rooted in the world of global finance, most notably serving as a partner at Goldman Sachs from 1999 to 2011. During his tenure at the firm, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of the UK investment banking division between 2006 and 2011, honing the strategic skills that the MCC hopes to leverage in the coming years.

His expertise is not confined to finance; he is also the founder and Chief Financial Officer of Genel Energy, a London-listed energy firm. Beyond his corporate interests, Metherell has demonstrated a commitment to governance and institutional leadership, having chaired the Advisory Board of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University and served as the Non-Executive Chair of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) from 2019 to 2024.

The Architect of the London Spirit Deal

Perhaps the most significant aspect of Metherell’s recent contributions to the sport is his instrumental role in the landmark 2025 Hundred equity sale. He spearheaded the complex negotiations that saw a Silicon Valley consortium, led by Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora, secure a 49% stake in the London Spirit for approximately £145 million. This deal transformed the franchise into the wealthiest in the competition.

Following the successful transfer of the franchise from the ECB to its new ownership on October 1, 2025, Metherell was named as the chair of the London Spirit. His elevation to the MCC presidency is widely viewed as a reflection of the increasing synergy between the club’s traditional values and the commercial evolution represented by the London Spirit franchise.

Vision for the Future

Reflecting on his appointment, Metherell expressed a sense of humility and excitement. “I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols,” he noted. “I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord’s. This is a really exciting time to be involved with MCC, especially as it starts a new era of ownership of a professional cricket team and I am looking forward to driving forward both the Club and London Spirit.”

His predecessor, Ed Smith, who personally nominated Metherell, emphasized the need for a leader who balances commercial experience with an innate love for the game. “During such an exciting period for MCC, I wanted to choose a successor with huge expertise and experience, combined with a deep passion for the game and for the club,” Smith said. “Julian Metherell is a great and trusted friend to cricket and an exceptional candidate.”

Looking Ahead: The 2027 Ashes

Metherell’s presidency will coincide with a major milestone for the club. As he settles into his new responsibilities, the global cricketing community is looking toward the 2027 Ashes series, which will be hosted at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. With both the Australian men’s and women’s teams set to grace the hallowed turf, Metherell will undoubtedly be at the center of one of the sport’s most anticipated events. His appointment marks a pivotal moment for the MCC as it navigates the modernization of the sport while remaining the guardian of its rich heritage.
