A New Chapter for the Red Rose: Steven Croft Named Lancashire Head Coach
The Lancashire dressing room has a familiar face at the helm! Lancashire Cricket has officially confirmed Steven Croft as the club’s permanent head coach, cementing his transition from a legendary player to the man tasked with leading the team to future glory.
From Club Icon to Tactical Leader
After stepping into the interim role following the departure of Dale Benkenstein in May, Croft turned the tide for Lancashire. Despite a winless start to the County Championship season, Croft’s leadership saw the side rally to a commendable fifth-place finish in Division Two and a thrilling run to T20 Blast Finals Day.
Reflecting on his new appointment, the 41-year-old expressed his deep-rooted connection to the club:
“It means so much to have the honour of being named head coach of this great club. Lancashire has been a huge part of my life – from joining the academy as a young player, to captaining the team, and now stepping into this role off the field.”
Building on Momentum
Croft, who boasts over 600 appearances for the club and was a key member of the 2011 Championship-winning side, is eager to capitalize on the momentum gained during the latter half of the 2024 season. His mission is clear: development, dedication, and delivering success to the faithful supporters at Emirates Old Trafford.
Why Croft Was the Outstanding Choice
Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, praised the impact Croft had during his interim period, noting his unique ability to connect with the squad:
- Outstanding Leadership: Successfully guided the team through a challenging transition period.
- Deep Knowledge: A profound understanding of the game honed over a decorated playing career.
- Passionate Vision: An unwavering commitment to the Red Rose identity.
As part of the club’s strategic restructuring, Croft will take a hands-on role in day-to-day coaching. He will be supported by a dedicated team, including assistant coach Will Porterfield, as the club eyes a return to the top tier of English cricket. With a talented and driven squad at his disposal, the future looks incredibly bright at Emirates Old Trafford under the stewardship of one of their own.
