Shock Exits as Western Australia Overhaul Squad Following Shield Struggles

The Western Australia cricket landscape has undergone a significant shift, with several key players finding themselves without contracts for the upcoming season. Most surprisingly, fast bowler Bryce Jackson has been let go, despite a stellar performance in the One-Day Cup where he finished as the state’s leading wicket-taker.

Jackson’s statistics were impressive, claiming 15 wickets at an average of 22.13. His overall List A record stands at 34 wickets at 20.79 across 14 matches. Despite his success in white-ball cricket and his previous representation of Australia A, the 26-year-old struggled to break into the WA Sheffield Shield side, which likely contributed to the decision to move in a different direction.

A Season of Transition and Tough Decisions

Jackson is not the only casualty in the recent roster cuts. Teague Wyllie, the 21-year-old batter once touted as a future star after becoming WA’s youngest Shield century-maker in 2022, has also seen his domestic deal expire. Wyllie had shown flashes of brilliance, including a 71 for a Cricket Australia XI against the England Lions last season, but managed only two Shield matches.

Joining them in the exit list are Baxter Holt and Keaton Critchell. Furthermore, the state has lost Cameron Gannon, WA’s player of the season, who has departed for family reasons to return to Queensland. Gannon left a significant void in the bowling attack after claiming 42 wickets at 24.38 in the Shield.

The ‘Contract Squeeze’ and New Arrivals

The restructuring was partly driven by a ‘contract squeeze.’ With pace bowlers Jhye Richardson and Lance Morris returning to the domestic list after losing their Cricket Australia (CA) deals, space became limited. However, WA has managed to find room for Kieran Elliott, a quick arriving from Tasmania.

Elliott brings a proven track record, having taken 10 wickets at 38.60 in four Shield games last season, following a dominant previous summer where he claimed 29 wickets at 24.86. WA general manager Kade Harvey expressed optimism about the new addition, stating, “We feel now is an opportune time to welcome some fresh faces into the squad after a season that did not play out how we would’ve liked.”

Rising Stars and Coaching Changes

The squad is also welcoming new blood through promotions and rewards for performance. Emerging allrounder Will Malajczuk has earned his first full contract, while opening batter Tom Murray has been rewarded for his exemplary form in Premier Cricket (four centuries) and the WA second XI (three half-centuries).

This roster shake-up follows a dismal run for the state, which claimed its second consecutive wooden spoon in the Sheffield Shield. This also marked the end of Adam Voges’ tenure as state coach. Taking the reins is former Australian Test left-arm wristspinner Beau Casson, while Voges will transition to focusing solely on his role as coach of the Perth Scorchers in the BBL.

Western Australia Men’s Squad 2026-27

The finalized squad for the upcoming season includes a blend of experienced internationals and emerging domestic talent:

  • Batters/Allrounders: Cameron Bancroft, Mahli Beardman, Hilton Cartwright, Cooper Connolly, Brody Couch, Jayden Goodwin, Cameron Green (CA), Aaron Hardie, Liam Haskett, Mitchell Marsh (CA), Tom Murray, Ashton Turner, Sam Whiteman.
  • Bowlers: Simon Budge (rookie), Kieran Elliot, Albert Esterhuysen (rookie), Sam Fanning, Josh Inglis (CA), Will Malajczuk, Lance Morris, Joel Paris, Jordan Quiggin (rookie), Jhye Richardson, Corey Rocchiccioli, Corey Wasley (rookie).

As Western Australia enters this new era under Beau Casson, the focus will be on integrating these new faces and finding a winning formula to erase the memory of the recent wooden spoons.
