Shock Cuts in Western Australia’s Bowling Attack
Western Australia (WA) has announced its squad for the 2026-27 season, and the news is a stark reminder of the brutal nature of professional sports. In a move that has sent ripples through the domestic circuit, fast bowler Bryce Jackson has lost his state contract despite being the team’s leading wicket-taker in the recent One-Day Cup.
Jackson, 26, had a statistically strong season in the white-ball format, claiming 15 wickets at an average of 22.13. His overall List A record remains impressive, with 34 wickets at 20.79 across 14 matches. However, his inability to break into the highly competitive Shield side proved to be his undoing. Despite representing Australia A and featuring in the Top End series against Sri Lanka A, the lack of red-ball opportunities prevented him from securing his place in the roster.
A Season of Transition and Departure
Jackson isn’t the alone in facing a contract squeeze. 21-year-old batter Teague Wyllie—once touted as a future star and the youngest Shield century-maker in WA’s history back in 2022—has also seen his domestic deal not renewed. Wyllie’s recent form had flickered, including a notable 71 for a Cricket Australia XI against England Lions, but just two Shield matches this past season were not enough to sustain his contract.
Alongside Jackson and Wyllie, Baxter Holt and Keaton Critchell have also departed the squad. Furthermore, Cameron Gannon, the state’s player of the season who took 42 wickets at 24.38 in the Shield, has left for family reasons to return to Queensland.
Addressing the Wooden Spoon
The catalyst for these changes comes after a dismal period for the state. WA finished with their second consecutive wooden spoon in the the Sheffield Shield, marking the end of an era as Adam Voges stepped down as state coach. He will continue his role as coach of the Perth Scorchers in the BBL.
The coaching change is paired with a tactical shift. Beau Casson, the former Australian Test wristspinner, has taken the reins as the new WA head coach, aiming to reset the culture and climb out of the bottom of the table.
New Blood and Strategic Additions
WA General Manager Kade Harvey described the period as an “opportunous time to welcome some fresh faces” following a season that didn’t meet expectations. The squad is seeing a significant influx of new talent:
- Kieran Elliott: A quick from Tasmania who took 10 wickets at 38.60 last season after a stellar 29 wickets the summer prior.
- Will Malajczuk: The emerging all-rounder has been rewarded with his first full contract.
- Tom Murray: An opening batter who dominated Premier Cricket with four centuries last season and three half-centuries for the WA second XI.
The team also faces a “contract squeeze” due to the return of Jhye Richardson and Lance Morris to the domestic list after losing their central contracts with Cricket Australia.
