The Return of a Cricket Icon: Shaheed Chandu Stadium’s International Comeback
For cricket fans in Bogura and across Bangladesh, the wait is finally over. The Shaheed Chandu Stadium, once a vibrant hub of international cricket, has been set for a major comeback. State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, confirmed the announcement during a recent inspection visit to the stadium, signaling a new era of professional sports infrastructure in the region.
The Road to Restoration: Meeting ICC Standards
The State Minister noted that while the stadium was once a very active international venue, it had unfortunately fallen into a state of neglect for several years. To rectify this, the current government has committed to rebuilding the stadium according to strict ICC (International Cricket Council) standards. This ensures that the pitch, boundaries, and overall facilities will be able to host high-stakes international matches once again.
The restoration process is not just about the aesthetics; it is a critical upgrade of the core infrastructure. During his inspection, Aminul Haque highlighted several areas requiring urgent attention:
- Floodlights: The current lighting system is in poor condition and needs complete overhaul to allow for night matches.
- Dressing Rooms: Player facilities, which are part of the same standard of care, must be upgraded to provide professional environments.
- Galleries: The spectator seating areas need renovation to ensure safety and comfort for the fans.
- Drainage System: One of the most critical aspects of any cricket ground, the drainage system must be improved to prevent match delays due to rain.
Immediate Goals: Hosting the Women’s BPL
With an ambitious timeline, the government is aiming for a quick turnaround. There is already a concrete plan to host the Women’s BPL in July, and all current preparations are being focused with that goal in mind. This move not only brings the women’s game to Bogura but also serves as a test run for the stadium’s readiness for international level play.
Beyond the Stadium: The Bogura Sports Village
The vision for sports in Bogura extends beyond just the restoreration of the stadium. State Minister Aminul Haque also announced that as part of a national plan to establish “Sports Villages” featuring modern indoor facilities, the Rajshahi division’s designated village will be built in Bogura. This project, expected to begin in the next fiscal year starting in June, will provide a state-of-the-art training center for athletes of all disciplines.
Addressing Past Neglect and Future Promises
When questioned about allegations of equipment theft and long-term neglect, the minister was candid. He acknowledged that the past had been suffered, but emphasized that the current administration is committed to fulfilling its promises. Working alongside the BCB CEO and members of the an ad-hoc committee, the government has already identified the root causes of these failures.
The minister admitted that these changes will not happen overnight, but he expressed strong confidence that within a set timeframe, Shaheed Chandu Stadium will once again be presented to the world as an international cricket venue. Furthermore, a special committee formed by the Prime Minister’s Office is now working to preserve playgrounds across the country and create better opportunities for the future generations of cricketers.
Official Presence and Collaboration
The visit was conducted in the presence of high-ranking officials, including BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, ad-hoc committee member Rafiqul Islam Babu, and local MPs and district officials. This collaborative effort between the government, the government’s sports ministry and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is crucial for ensuring the stadium’s success.
With the renewed investment and engineers from the National Sports Council, the stadium is gradually transforming from a neglected site into a modern arena. Bogura’s passion for cricket is deflected to the return of international cricket to the city, as the stadium is finally being restored to its glory.
