Peshawar Zalmi’s Unbeaten Streak: The Bangladeshi Connection

Peshawar Zalmi is currently the team to beat in this year’s HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL). After six matches, they remain the only unbeaten side in the competition, boasting five wins and one abandoned game. With a commanding 11 points, Zalmi sits comfortably at the top of the table, making them the early favorites for the title.

While the batting order often grabs the headlines, the team’s success has been underpinned by a disciplined and effective bowling attack. Specifically, two Bangladeshi pacers, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam, have played pivotal roles in stabilizing the bowling unit and restricting opponents.

The Impact of Shoriful Islam and Nahid Rana

Although the wicket tallies might not always tell the full story, the impact of the Bangladeshi duo has been significant. Nahid Rana has been particularly impressive, claiming 7 wickets in 4 matches. This performance has placed him fifth on the overall list of top wicket-takers this season, proving himself to be a lethal weapon in the gym.

Shoriful Islam, on the other hand, has taken 2 wickets in 5 matches. While his wicket count is lower, his value to captain Babar Azam has been indispensable. Shoriful has become a trusted option with the new ball, providing the control and pressure that allows the opposition to struggle from the outset.

Dominance in the Latest Encounter

In their most recent fixture, Peshawar Zalmi defeated the Multan Sultans by 24 runs. The match highlighted the strength of Zalmi’s bowling strategy. Shoriful Islam was exceptionally economical, conceding just 27 runs throughout his spell without taking a wicket. His ability to maintain pressure is a key factor in the Zalmi strategy.

Nahid Rana continued his fine form, delivering a masterclass in death bowling and middle-over control, picking up 2 wickets for 24 runs. The combined pressure from both Bangladeshi pacers has made it difficult for the Sultans to build momentum.

By the Numbers: Economy and Dot Balls

The statistics further emphasize why these two bowlers are playing such a critical role. Nahid Rana has emerged as the most economical bowler in the tournament so far, maintaining a brilliant economy rate of 5.43. Even more impressive is his dot ball percentage, which stands at 61.67%—the highest in the entire competition.

Shoriful Islam also shares this importance, with a dot ball percentage of 46.97%, ranking him fourth on the list of most disciplined bowlers. By denying the opposition easy runs, these Bangladeshi pacers are effectively starving the opposition of boundary hits, which is more recently leading to wickets at the other end.

Babar Azam’s Perspective

Speaking at the post-match press conference, captain Babar Azam expressed his satisfaction with the bowling attack’s performance. He specifically highlighted Shoriful’s ability to provide a strong start to the innings.

“If we talk about bowling, Shoriful is giving us a good start. Along with him, Iftikhar Ahmed is also doing really well with the new ball. As a team, we are trying to play good cricket. Half of the tournament is done, and many big matches are still ahead. The momentum is with us, but we want to improve even more. We will correct our mistakes and try to win against every new opponent we face.”

As Peshawar Zalmi Zalmi continues their move toward the playoffs, the momentum is clearly with them. With the a disciplined bowling attack led by the Bangladeshi duo and the captaincy of Babar Azam, Zalmi is looking to maintain their unbeaten streak and run toward the title.
