A New Era of Respect for Bangladesh’s Captains
The landscape of Bangladesh cricket administration is undergoing a significant shift. With Tamim Iqbal now serving as the president of the ad-hoc committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), a series of impactful decisions are being implemented to prioritize player welfare and recognition. Following a previous board dissolved by the National Sports Council (NSC), Tamim has moved quickly to address long-standing gaps in how the board treats its most distinguished leaders.
From immediate increases in players’ salaries and match fees, the latest initiative is perhaps the most symbolic and practical: the introduction of the Captains’ Card. Officially launched during a grand ceremony at a five-star hotel in Dhaka on April 16, this card serves as a lifetime identity for those who have carried the weight of leadership on the international stage.
The Scope of the Captains’ Card
The initiative is inclusive, covering both the men’s and women’s national teams. A total of 27 captains from the men’s side and 6 from the women’s side were recognized. While not all recipients were able to attend the ceremony, the BCB has ensured that their cards are available for collection at the board office, ensuring no leader is left behind.
Lifetime Access and VVIP Treatment
Tamim Iqbal was clear about the purpose of the card: dignity and ease of access. He emphasized that a former captain of Bangladesh should never have to navigate the bureaucracy of ticket requests or the hassle of queues.
“As long as I’m here, a Bangladesh captain should never have to call and ask for a ticket. And no captain should ever have to stand in line to get one,” Tamim stated during the ceremony.
The card acts as a comprehensive pass for a wide range of events, including:
- International Series: All home series and Bangladesh national team matches.
- Major Tournaments: ICC and ACC events.
- Domestic and Franchise Cricket: The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and other domestic competitions.
Furthermore, the benefits extend beyond the captain themselves, covering their immediate family members. This ensures that the leaders of the game can enjoy the game they served with their loved ones without any friction.
Beyond the Stadium: Health and Logistics
One of the most significant additions to the Captains’ Card is the inclusion of comprehensive health insurance. Recognizing the toll that professional sports takes on the body, Tamim announced that all former captains will now receive health insurance after retirement, mirroring the benefits current national team players receive.
The board’s medical team will be available 24/7, providing support for emergency medical needs, doctor appointments, and assistance even when the captains are abroad. This removes a load of anxiety for many former players who often worry about healthcare access after their playing days are over.
The ‘VVIP’ Experience
Tamim also addressed the logistical frustrations that often plague high-profile figures at stadiums, particularly in Mirpur. He noted that the card includes priority car parking, allowing captains to avoid the crowds and the chaos of stadium entry.
“In Mirpur, where we say ‘VVIP,’ for us, no one is more important than you,” Tamim remarked, highlighting that the priority treatment is not just about luxury, but about respect for their contribution to the game.
A Vision for the Future
While the current benefits are comprehensive, the BCB is not viewing this as the final step. Tamim Iqbal has hinted that as the board grows and evolves, the benefits associated with the Captains’ Card will be expanded further. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to show respect and gratitude to those who have led the nation’s cricket journey.
Despite the absences of some prominent figures like Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, and Faruque Ahmed at the ceremony, Tamim confirmed he has remained in communication with most of them, ensuring that the same level of respect and legacy preservation is carried forward for all.
