David Payne Ruled Out of IPL 2026 Amid SRH’s Bowling Injury Crisis

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s injury woes have deepened after seamer David Payne was ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to an ankle injury. The English pacer, brought in as a replacement for fellow Australian quick Jack Edwards — who missed the entire season with a foot problem — managed just two appearances before succumbing to injury.

Limited Impact Before Injury

Payne’s stint in the tournament was brief. He bowled three overs in SRH’s opening match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, picking up 2 wickets for 35 runs. In his second and final outing, against Kolkata Knight Riders, he returned figures of 0 for 35 in two overs before being sidelined. His departure adds further strain to an already-thin SRH pace attack.

Another Blow: Carse Exits Without Playing

The injury list for Sunrisers keeps growing. Just days ago, England allrounder Brydon Carse was ruled out after sustaining a hand injury during a net session early in the season. Carse, signed to bolster SRH’s lower-order firepower and seam options, didn’t get a chance to feature in a single game.

To fill the void, SRH brought in Sri Lankan speedster Dilshan Madushanka as a replacement. Now, with Payne also out, the onus falls even more heavily on Madushanka and the rest of the pace unit to deliver under pressure.

Cummins Set for Comeback?

There is, however, a silver lining. Captain Pat Cummins has received medical clearance to rejoin the squad after undergoing back scans in Sydney. The Australian Test skipper has not featured this season due to lingering back concerns, but there’s growing optimism he could make his IPL 2026 debut against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on April 25.

His return would provide a major boost both in leadership and on-field performance, especially with the side navigating through this injury crisis.

SRH Finding Form Despite Challenges

In Cummins’ absence, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has led the side and guided SRH to two wins in five matches. The team currently sits fourth in the points table, level on four points with four other franchises but ahead on net run rate.

Their last outing was a promising performance against Rajasthan Royals, where two uncapped young pacers — Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain — stole the show, each claiming four wickets. Their emergence offers a glimmer of hope for a team searching for consistency and depth.

Next Challenge: Clash Against Chennai Super Kings

SRH’s next assignment is a crucial home fixture against Chennai Super Kings this Saturday in Hyderabad. With injuries depleting their fast-bowling options, the match could hinge on how well the young squad members and potential returnees handle the pressure.

While the absence of Payne and Carse is a setback, the possible return of Cummins, combined with the rise of homegrown talent, presents an opportunity for SRH to redefine their campaign.

  • Injured Out: David Payne (ankle), Brydon Carse (hand), Jack Edwards (foot)
  • Replacements In: Dilshan Madushanka (for Carse), David Payne (initially for Edwards)
  • Captain: Ishan Kishan (interim); Pat Cummins (expected back April 25)
  • Next Match: SRH vs CSK, Hyderabad, Saturday

As Sunrisers Hyderabad navigate through one of their most challenging IPL phases, all eyes will be on how resilience and youth can blend to keep their playoff hopes alive.
