David Miller erased recent heartbreak with a moment of pure redemption, launching a breathtaking assault in the final over to power Delhi Capitals to a dramatic victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. After failing to finish a tight game against Gujarat Titans just ten days ago, Miller ensured there would be no repeat, smashing Romario Shepherd for 6, 6, and 4 in the last over to seal the win with balls to spare.
Redemption in the Final Over
‘It feels really good, to get one for the other night,’ Miller said in a post-match interview, visibly relieved and elated. ‘Was disappointed a couple of games ago, but to get ourselves back in that position, feels good to get over the line. It’s always going to be there at the back of the mind until you actually win another game. I’ll take it.’
Needing 15 off the final six balls, RCB’s bowlers held their nerve early in the over, conceding only two singles from the first two deliveries. But with 13 required off four balls and Miller back on strike, the South African veteran shifted gears dramatically. He cleared midwicket for a huge six, smashed another over the covers, and then drove the winning runs through the off side to finish on the penultimate ball.
A Rocky Start to a Match-Winning Stand
Miller entered the fray at a tense juncture — Axar Patel had retired hurt due to cramps with DC still needing 42 off 25 balls. The momentum stalled with frequent interruptions and disciplined yorker bowling from RCB, leaving Miller struggling to find rhythm.
‘Batting where I did, there was a lot of stop and starts this game. It felt like you couldn’t get going,’ Miller admitted. ‘Mind’s got a bit scrambled, but when I walked in there, Stubbo said to me, “keep your intensity really high.” For me, that helped a lot, which kicked me into a good frame of mind.’
His opening exchange with Tristan Stubbs yielded just two boundaries in the first six balls Miller faced — all of them well-directed yorkers. But the mental switch Stubbs sparked proved pivotal.
Strategic Calm Amid Pressure
Though the game was won in the last over, the plan wasn’t to leave it that late. Miller revealed DC aimed to close it in the 19th over.
‘We were trying to finish it in the second-to-last over, but we needed 40-odd runs in the last four overs,’ he explained. ‘We always knew there was one, two sixes within a six and back-to-back fours and the bowler’s always under pressure from there.’
The key, Miller emphasized, was minimizing dot balls and maintaining clear communication. From the 18th over onward, DC ensured no dot balls, with crucial boundaries off both Miller and Stubbs keeping the required rate in check despite a rate exceeding 12 runs per over.
Credit to Stubbs
Miller reserved special praise for Tristan Stubbs, whose composed 38* off 21 balls provided the perfect foundation.
‘It’s always good finishing off games with Stubbo. He just said, “thanks so much, you saved me there,”‘ Miller smiled. ‘He batted unbelievably well, anchored the innings all the way through. He’s got a great technique and he’s powerful. Him being there was massive for us.’
The 45-run partnership between Miller and Stubbs, though slow to ignite, exploded at the perfect moment. As Miller put it simply: ‘Coming in when I did, you gotta take the lead and try and be more on the aggressive side. But just, job well done.’
