The Return of a Game-Changer
The anticipation is over. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has officially been named in India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against South Africa, set to begin on November 14 in Kolkata. Pant’s return marks a pivotal moment for the Indian side as they look to solidify their position in the World Test Championship standings.
Pant, who had been sidelined since July following a foot fracture sustained during the fourth Test against England in Manchester, has proven his fitness in spectacular fashion. Leading India A to a victory against South Africa A at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru last week, Pant signaled his readiness by scoring a brilliant 90 in the second innings to help chase down a target of 275.
Key Squad Changes and Strategic Selections
The selection committee has made calculated adjustments to the squad that successfully defeated the West Indies 2-0 back in October. Rishabh Pant replaces N Jagadeesan, while Akash Deep earns a well-deserved call-up, taking the spot previously held by Prasidh Krishna. Akash Deep, who was previously sidelined with a back injury, has demonstrated his regained form by participating in two rounds of the Ranji Trophy for Bengal.
Interestingly, Mohammed Shami remains on the outside looking in. Despite a strong domestic showing, having taken 15 wickets across the first three rounds of the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, Shami was not included in this selection, highlighting the intense competition for places in the Indian bowling lineup.
The Road Ahead: Building for the Test Series
The core of the Test team, led by captain Shubman Gill, is currently engaged in the white-ball format in Australia. The group includes Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, all of whom are scheduled to join the Test squad immediately following the conclusion of the T20I series on November 8.
Furthermore, the team management is being proactive regarding preparation. Kuldeep Yadav was released from the T20I squad in Hobart early to ensure he could acclimatize and prepare for the red-ball challenge by featuring in the second four-day match for India A against South Africa A, starting November 6.
