Lancashire Bolster Squad with Gloucestershire Allrounder Ben Charlesworth
Lancashire Cricket has officially announced the signing of Gloucestershire’s versatile allrounder, Ben Charlesworth, on a three-year deal. The 25-year-old is set to remain with Gloucestershire until the conclusion of the current season before formally joining the Red Rose on November 1. His contract will see him represent Lancashire through the end of the 2029 summer season, marking a major long-term investment by the club.
Charlesworth’s departure from Bristol follows a period of uncertainty regarding his future. Despite his deep roots at Gloucestershire, negotiations over a contract extension beyond 2026 reached an impasse earlier this year. In a rare move for the county circuit, Gloucestershire granted Charlesworth permission to speak with other clubs ahead of the traditional June 1st deadline—a date usually reserved for players in the final year of their deals to explore external opportunities. This transparency allowed Lancashire to move quickly and secure one of the most promising talents in Division Two.
A Proven Performer with the Bat and Ball
Charlesworth brings a wealth of experience and a high ceiling for development to the Emirates Old Trafford. Throughout his first-class career, he has amassed 2,869 runs and claimed 33 wickets. However, it is his recent form that has truly caught the eye of scouts across the country. All four of his first-class centuries have come within the last two seasons, signaling his maturation as a top-order batter.
The 2025 campaign has been particularly fruitful for the left-hander, who recorded a career-best 914 runs, including two vital centuries. His ability to open the batting as a left-hander provides Lancashire with crucial tactical flexibility. Beyond his batting, Charlesworth is a capable right-arm medium-fast bowler, offering the kind of ‘dexterity’ that Director of Cricket Performance Mark Chilton believes is vital for a multi-format squad. His contributions were also instrumental in Gloucestershire’s 2024 T20 Blast triumph, where he chipped in with 221 runs to help secure the trophy.
Familiar Faces and New Ambitions
The move to Manchester will see Charlesworth reunite with several familiar figures. He follows in the footsteps of fast bowler Ajeet Singh Dale, who made a similar move from Gloucestershire to Lancashire earlier this season. Additionally, Lancashire’s assistant coach, Will Porterfield, previously worked with Charlesworth at Bristol, providing a level of continuity that should help the allrounder hit the ground running.
Speaking on the move, Charlesworth expressed his enthusiasm: “I am really excited to be joining Lancashire. It’s a club with a proud history and strong ambitions across all formats. I know Ajeet Singh Dale and Will Porterfield well, and they have spoken very highly about the set-up at Lancs and at Emirates Old Trafford. I am looking forward to taking this next challenge in my career.”
Lancashire’s Strategic Vision
For Lancashire, the acquisition of Charlesworth is a statement of intent. The club currently sits at the top of Division Two, ironically fueled by a recent victory over Gloucestershire, who are struggling at the bottom of the table. By bringing in a player of Charlesworth’s caliber, Lancashire is clearly planning for a sustained period of dominance in the top tier.
Director of Cricket Performance Mark Chilton highlighted the club’s long-term interest in the player: “Ben is a player we have tracked closely for some time, and we are delighted to have secured his services. His ability to contribute across multiple areas of the game makes him a valuable addition to our squad, particularly with his capability to bat in different positions.” Chilton also extended his gratitude to Gloucestershire’s Jon Lewis for facilitating the early negotiations, which allowed the deal to be finalized ahead of schedule.
What This Means for Gloucestershire
While Lancashire celebrates, the loss of Charlesworth is a significant blow for Gloucestershire. Having already seen Ajeet Singh Dale depart, the loss of a top-order batter and seam option further depletes their core. The impasse in contract negotiations suggests a shift in the club’s long-term planning or financial structure, but for now, Charlesworth remains committed to helping the side finish their current campaign on a high note before he heads north in November.
As the domestic season enters its final stretch, all eyes will be on Charlesworth to see if he can add to his impressive run tally before donning the Red Rose for the 2027 season and beyond.
