Ben Charlesworth Set for Lancashire Switch in 2027

Gloucestershire allrounder Ben Charlesworth will begin a new chapter in his career after agreeing to join Lancashire on a three-year deal, effective from November 1, 2026. The 25-year-old will officially become a Red Rose player ahead of the 2027 domestic season, marking a significant addition to Lancashire’s squad as they aim to build momentum across all formats.

A Mutual Decision Ends a Testing Month

The confirmation of Charlesworth’s move brings closure to a somewhat awkward period for both the player and Gloucestershire. Just two days before their County Championship opener against Middlesex, the Bristol-based county announced that Charlesworth would be departing at season’s end. This came after six months of stalled talks over extending his contract beyond 2026.

In a move that broke with usual protocol, Gloucestershire granted Charlesworth permission to speak with other counties before June 1 — the standard date when out-of-contract players can formally negotiate with new clubs. ESPNcricinfo revealed at the time that the early consent reflected the impasse in negotiations and a mutual understanding that a parting of ways was inevitable.

What Charlesworth Brings to Lancashire

A left-handed top-order batter and a capable right-arm seamer, Charlesworth offers valuable flexibility. Across 44 first-class matches, he has amassed 2,869 runs and taken 33 wickets, proving himself an effective allrounder at the county level.

His breakthrough seasons came in 2024 and 2025, where he scored all four of his first-class centuries. The 2025 campaign was his most prolific to date, delivering 914 runs — a tally that underscored his growing consistency at the crease. In the 2024 T20 Blast, he also chipped in with 221 runs, contributing to Gloucestershire’s eventual title triumph.

His performance in Lancashire’s recent victory over Gloucestershire — scoring 26 and 13 — may have only been a glimpse, but it came against the team he’ll soon represent.

Reuniting With Familiar Faces

Charlesworth’s transition to Emirates Old Trafford will be eased by familiar company. He will reunite with former Gloucestershire teammate Ajeet Singh Dale, who made the same move in 2025. Additionally, he will work under Will Porterfield, Lancashire’s assistant coach and another former colleague from Bristol.

“I am really excited to be joining Lancashire,” Charlesworth said. “It’s a club with a proud history and strong ambitions across all formats. I know Ajeet Singh Dale and Will Porterfield well from their time at Gloucestershire, and they have spoken very highly about the set-up at Lancs and at Emirates Old Trafford. I am looking forward to taking this next challenge in my career and contributing to a successful Lancashire side for the seasons ahead.”

Lancashire’s Strategic Acquisition

For Lancashire, the signing represents a forward-looking move. Having topped Division Two after defeating Gloucestershire, the club is keen to strengthen its squad depth and youth pipeline. Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, emphasized Charlesworth’s broad skill set as a deciding factor.

“Ben is a player we have tracked closely for some time, and we are delighted to have secured his services from the 2027 season onwards. His ability to contribute across multiple areas of the game makes him a valuable addition to our squad, particularly with his capability to bat in different positions and provide a seam bowling option.”

Chilton also acknowledged Jon Lewis, Gloucestershire’s director of cricket, for facilitating the early dialogue, calling it a “professional and respectful” process.

Another Departure for Gloucestershire

Charlesworth becomes the seventh player to leave Gloucestershire since the end of the 2024 season, highlighting a period of significant turnover. While the club continues to rebuild, Lancashire appears to be the beneficiary of their transitional phase.

As the 2026 season unfolds, all eyes will be on Charlesworth’s final campaign with Gloucestershire — and on how quickly he can make an impact once he dons the Lancashire red in 2027.
