The Meteoric Rise of a Cricket Prodigy

The landscape of women’s cricket in India is undergoing a transformative shift, and at the heart of this evolution is a 16-year-old sensation named Ira Jadhav. As the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women’s League, an ambitious initiative by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), gets underway, Jadhav has already captured the spotlight by becoming the league’s most expensive acquisition.

Born in Pune in February 2010, Jadhav has rapidly transitioned from a promising junior cricketer to a household name. Her journey is characterized by relentless aggression, technical precision, and a hunger for runs that has left seasoned observers in awe.

The Triple Century that Made History

Jadhav first signaled her arrival on the national stage when she shattered records in the BCCI’s junior circuit. Last year, at the age of just 15, she etched her name into the history books by becoming the first Indian cricketer to score a triple century in the U19 format. During a match against Meghalaya in the Women’s Under-19 One-Day Trophy, Jadhav launched a blistering assault, scoring 346 runs from a mere 157 deliveries. Her innings included a staggering 42 boundaries and 16 massive sixes, helping Mumbai post a colossal 563-3. The match eventually saw Mumbai secure a historic 544-run victory.

Auction Day Triumph

On Saturday, May 2, the T20 Mumbai Women’s League auction served as a testament to Jadhav’s value. The Aakash Tigers franchise secured her services for a remarkable sum of Rs. 10 lakhs. Reflecting on her massive achievement, Jadhav expressed immense gratitude: “I am really grateful to MCA and Aakash Tigers for having so much faith in me and trust in me. I am really happy, and I hope I make the best of this opportunity.”

MCA President Ajinkya Naik lauded the selection, noting that the prominence of young talents like Jadhav highlights the strength of the grassroots development framework currently in place in Mumbai.

A Decorated Career Path

Before her record-breaking auction performance, Jadhav had already earned significant recognition. She was a standby player for the triumphant India Women’s team during the 2025 ICC U19 World Cup in Malaysia. Furthermore, her consistency was rewarded at the Naman Awards, where she was named the ‘Best Woman Cricketer’ for the 2024-25 Indian domestic season in the Junior Domestic category. This places her in elite company, as senior star Shafali Verma also received accolades at the same event.

Aakash Tigers: Building for Championship Success

The Aakash Tigers are clearly aiming for the title, pairing Jadhav with other top-tier talents. The franchise also acquired India’s U19 World Cup-winning vice-captain, Sanika Chalke, for Rs. 5.50 lakhs. The complete squad reflects a blend of experience and youthful energy:

  • Squad Members: Humaira Kazi, Ira Jadhav, Sanika Chalke, Fatima Jaffer, Jeeya Mandrawadkar, Siddhi Pawar, Manali Dakshini, Siddhi Kamthe, Jagravi Pawar, Ritika Yadav, Kimaya Rane, Batul Pereira, Mitali Mhatre, Mulla Alina Farid, Samruddhi Rawool, and Gargee Warang.

As the T20 Mumbai Women’s League prepares to showcase the best talent in the region, all eyes will undoubtedly be on Ira Jadhav. Whether she can translate her domestic run-scoring form into T20 success remains to be seen, but given her trajectory thus far, expectations are sky-high for this teenage sensation.
