IPL 2026: BCCI Introduces New Rules to Prevent Honey-Trapping and Other Incidents

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a warning to Indian Premier League (IPL) players and teams about the risks of honey-trapping and has introduced new rules to prevent such incidents.

What Led to the Warning?

The warning was issued after two incidents involving the Rajasthan Royals, where the team manager was fined for using a mobile phone in the dugout and the captain, Riyan Parag, was penalized for vaping in the dressing room.

Why Did BCCI Warn Players About Honey-Trapping?

The Anti-Corruption Unit of the BCCI has flagged the unauthorized access of individuals to players in the IPL, which could lead to honey-trapping and pose a risk to the high-profile nature of the tournament.

New IPL Code of Conduct

The BCCI has introduced a new code of conduct, which includes the following rules:

• Players have been told to remain vigilant while interacting with individuals and social media influencers.
• Access to player rooms is restricted, and approval from the Team Manager is needed before entering a player’s room.
• Players and support staff members need permission from security liaison officers before leaving the hotel.
• ID cards are mandatory in hotels, venues, and practice sessions.
• Owners are not allowed to meet or interact with players during matches.
• Use of vapes and e-cigarettes is banned.
• Mobile phones are banned from the dugouts for players and support staff members.

Consequences for Failing to Follow the Instructions

Franchises will be held responsible if their players and staff members are found guilty of breaking the rules. Players will be suspended with immediate effect for breaching the protocols.

The BCCI has formed a joint IPL Operations Task Force to ensure the implementation of the new rules. The officials will inspect hotel rooms and restricted zones, and no outsider will be allowed to enter a player’s room without prior permission from the Team Manager.

The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, stated that franchises will have to remain on alert and proactive to deal with the risks. Any breach will have to be reported to the IPL Operations Team or the relevant authority at the earliest.
