Anshul Kamboj: The Three-Phase Force Redefining Death Bowling in IPL 2026

Anshul Kamboj wasn’t on many radar screens just two seasons ago. Fast forward to IPL 2026, and he’s not just making noise—he’s dismantling batting line-ups with precision, consistency, and a plan that’s turning heads across the league. Currently tied for the Purple Cap lead with 17 wickets in nine matches, Kamboj has gone from being a fringe name to a frontline weapon for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

From Under the Radar to Center Stage

Kamboj’s journey has been anything but linear. A left-arm seamer from Haryana, he first made headlines in November 2024 by taking all ten wickets in a Ranji Trophy innings—a rare feat that stamped his potential. That performance earned him a spot in India’s Test squad in 2025, and while he made his debut at Old Trafford, he couldn’t cement his place in the national setup. In the IPL, he had a quiet stint with Mumbai Indians in 2024 before CSK recognized the latent wicket-taking ability others had missed.

His breakout came in 2025 with eight wickets in eight games—solid, but not spectacular. Now, in 2026, everything has clicked. With 17 dismissals and only one match without a wicket, Kamboj is among the league’s most consistent performers.

Mastering the CSK Blueprint

What changed? According to former players and coaches, it’s not raw talent—it’s structure. Kamboj has embraced the famed CSK death-bowling model, shaped over years by Dwayne Bravo and sustained under bowling coach Eric Simons.

Ambati Rayudu highlighted Kamboj’s versatility: “His capability of bowling in the powerplay, in the middle, as well as in the death—when you can do these three, I think you are among the top-five bowlers who have ever played IPL.”

That rare trinity—executing in all phases—sets Kamboj apart. His ability to angle the ball from around the stumps, particularly against right-handers, and land pinpoint yorkers has made him dangerous in the final overs. Rayudu called it “quite impressive,” noting that such skill doesn’t come easily.

A Plan, Not Just Pace

Former New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan pointed out that Kamboj’s edge isn’t speed—it’s intent. “He’s found a plan that works for him. He can execute it and it’s making him very effective, turning him into that three-phase bowler.”

The strategy is simple but effective: come around the wicket, use the angle to create uncertainty, and consistently hit that six-to-eight-metre length. McClenaghan grouped Kamboj with elite names like Josh Hazlewood, Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for his ability to hit this length with the new ball—a hallmark of top-tier IPL bowlers.

The added layer? Subtle seam movement that keeps batters guessing, even without express pace.

Coaching, Consistency, and the Road Ahead

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming wasn’t surprised: “Last year he was really good. He’s worked hard with Eric Simons around the concept of death bowling and he has worked during the year to master that.”

The pre-season work focused on angles, lengths, and situational awareness—knowing when to go around or over the stumps, and how to adapt under pressure. The results are visible: Kamboj rarely errs in length, and his execution under crunch moments has been “very impressive,” per Fleming.

Still, Rayudu cautions that evolution must continue. “He still needs to improve his slower ball, still needs to know how to bowl from over the stumps when things are not working.”

The Verdict: A Bowler in Full Flow

For now, Kamboj’s formula is working—spectacularly. His 17 wickets place him shoulder-to-shoulder with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the only difference being economy. But more than numbers, it’s the method that stands out: a smart, structured, repeatable plan rooted in CSK’s legacy, yet executed with modern precision.

What was once a raw talent has now matured into a calculated force. And as the IPL 2026 season unfolds, one thing is clear: Anshul Kamboj isn’t just cashing in—he’s building a legacy.
