BCB Prioritizes Safety with ICU Ambulances for Dhaka Premier League

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is stepping up its commitment to player health and safety by ensuring 4 to 5 ICU ambulances are on standby during the upcoming Dhaka Premier League (DPL). In a significant move, the board is also overhauling meal provisions to offer healthier food options to participating cricketers.

Reviving Domestic Cricket with Enhanced Care

The announcements were made by BCB president Tamim Iqbal during a press conference in Mirpur, marking a renewed focus on domestic cricket after a prolonged period of disruption. “This is probably one of the most important tournaments in our cricket ecosystem,” Tamim emphasized, highlighting the DPL’s crucial role in nurturing talent and providing livelihoods for domestic players.

After months of uncertainty, the board has successfully reorganized the tournament, which is now set to kick off on May 4. This season will feature a packed first day with six matches across six different venues—a logistical adjustment aimed at minimizing delays caused by weather disruptions.

A New Era of Safety and Preparedness

One of the most critical new measures is the availability of ICU ambulances at all match sites. This decision is deeply personal for Tamim, who suffered a life-threatening heart attack during the last DPL season and was rushed to KPJ Hospital. “I was fortunate enough to survive,” he reflected. “But over the years, we’ve seen four or five serious on-field incidents, some tragic. It’s our responsibility to act.”

Despite the challenges in securing ICU-grade ambulances, the BCB has arranged 4 to 5 units to ensure rapid medical response in emergencies. Every venue will have an ambulance on standby, and all matches will include reserve days due to the ongoing rainy season.

Healthier Meals for Better Performance

Beyond medical readiness, the board is addressing long-standing concerns about player nutrition. Traditionally, cricketers have been served heavy meals like rice, mashed dishes, and rich meat platters—choices not ideal for athletic performance. This year, the BCB will provide lunch to all teams with a focus on balanced, nutritious, and properly cooked food.

“We know players can’t switch overnight to grilled chicken and salads,” Tamim admitted. “National and U-19 players may be used to that, but domestic cricketers need time. Still, we’re committed to gradual, positive change.”

Challenges and Commitment

The BCB also acknowledged logistical hurdles, particularly with the use of BKSP grounds, which are harder to access and associated with player injuries and illness. While these venues will still be used, the board is preparing backup locations to ensure continuity.

Tamim reaffirmed the DPL’s status as the backbone of Bangladesh cricket—a platform where countless players earn their primary annual income and showcase their talent for national selection.

As the country gears up for the tournament, the BCB’s actions reflect not just organizational recovery, but a deeper commitment to the well-being of those who keep the game alive at the grassroots level.

With safety protocols strengthened and player care elevated, the 2024 Dhaka Premier League promises to be more than just a cricket competition—it’s a statement of responsibility and renewal.
