A New Era for Bangladesh Cricket Leadership
In a significant shift for the governance of Bangladesh cricket, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), under the leadership of Tamim Iqbal—who currently heads the board’s ad-hoc committee—has introduced a transformative initiative. Following the dissolution of the previous board led by Aminul Islam Bulbul by the National Sports Council (NSC), the new administration has hit the ground running with a clear focus on honoring those who have carried the weight of the nation on their shoulders.
The Captains’ Card Initiative
On April 16, a grand ceremony held at a premier hotel in Dhaka marked the official unveiling of the ‘Captains’ Card.’ This initiative is designed to provide former and current leaders of the national team with the respect, recognition, and practical benefits they deserve. A total of 27 men’s team captains and 6 women’s team captains were recognized, with the board ensuring that for those who could not attend, their cards remain safely held at the BCB offices for collection.
Restoring Dignity and Convenience
Tamim Iqbal, speaking with evident passion, emphasized that the card is more than just a piece of plastic; it is a symbol of gratitude. He articulated a vision where the discomfort of navigating bureaucracy is removed for the legends of the game. ‘As long as I’m here, a Bangladesh captain should never have to call and ask for a ticket. And no captain should ever have to stand in line to get one,’ Tamim stated, highlighting the board’s commitment to prioritizing the wellbeing and dignity of these individuals.
The benefits are comprehensive. The card serves as a lifetime ID for:
- Bangladesh home matches
- ICC and ACC sanctioned events
- BPL fixtures
- All domestic cricket competitions
Crucially, these benefits extend to the captains’ families, ensuring that the support system for our cricket heroes is robust and inclusive.
VVIP Status and Practical Perks
The BCB has also addressed the day-to-day challenges former players often face. Recognizing the logistical hurdles at venues like the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, the card includes VVIP parking privileges. ‘No more parking far away and walking through crowds,’ Tamim noted. ‘For us, no one is more important than you. You will always get priority.’ This move is designed to make the match-day experience seamless and comfortable for those who have given their lives to the sport.
A Commitment to Health and Longevity
Perhaps the most significant aspect of this initiative is the inclusion of health insurance. Beyond match-day perks, the BCB is committed to the long-term health of its former captains. The board is extending health insurance coverage to retirees, mirroring the protection offered to current national squad members. Furthermore, the BCB’s dedicated medical team will now be available 24/7 to assist former players with doctor appointments and medical consultations, even if they are seeking care while abroad.
Looking Toward the Future
While the initial rollout of the Captains’ Card marks a milestone, Tamim Iqbal hinted that this is only the beginning. As the board’s capacity grows, so too will the utility of the card. The initiative represents a culture shift within the organization, moving toward a structure that genuinely values the contribution of its past leaders. Although notable figures such as Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, and Faruque Ahmed were unable to attend the inaugural ceremony, the board has engaged in personal outreach to ensure all captains are aware of the new benefits available to them. This development is a clear signal that the BCB intends to treat its legends with the reverence they truly deserve, setting a high standard for how national sports bodies should interact with their storied alumni.
