Brooke Guest Century Boosts Derbyshire Against Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire 98 for 4 (Harrison 42*, Sales 33*, Haydon 2-29, Aitchison 2-31) trail Derbyshire 604 for 7 declared (Guest 141, Andersson 106, Jewell 94, Came 73, Madsen 59, Montgomery 54) by 506 runs
Guest’s Century Anchors Derbyshire’s Dominance
Brooke Guest marked his return to form in emphatic fashion, scoring a commanding 141 to propel Derbyshire to a commanding position on day two of their Rothesay County Championship clash against Northamptonshire at the Central Co-op County Ground.
The wicketkeeper’s first century in nearly three years formed the backbone of Derbyshire’s 604 for 7 declared – their sixth-highest first-class total in history – and left Northamptonshire with a daunting 506-run deficit to overcome.
Record-Breaking Partnership with Andersson
Guest’s innings was highlighted by a magnificent 241-run sixth-wicket stand alongside Martin Andersson, who also reached triple figures with a composed 106 – his second century of the season. Together, they erased any momentum Northamptonshire had briefly gained and reasserted total control for the hosts.
The partnership began under pressure after Harry Conway struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Wayne Madsen for a well-made 59 and Caleb Jewell just six runs short of a maiden Derbyshire hundred. Jewell, lured into playing at a delivery that seamed slightly, edged to the keeper to end a promising 94.
But Guest and Andersson responded with growing confidence. Guest pulled Conway over fine leg for four, while Andersson reached his milestone with a precise cut to third man in the 110th over. Their counterattack ensured the batting points were secured and the scoreboard continued to pile pressure on the visitors.
Derbyshire Declares; Northants Battle to Survive
The declaration came shortly after Guest attempted a slog-sweep and missed, ending a stand that had drained Northamptonshire’s bowling resources. It marked the second time this season Derbyshire have surpassed 600, setting Northants a colossal 455 runs to avoid following on.
The visitors’ reply started poorly. Ben Aitchison struck early, inducing Ricardo Vasconcelos to edge behind in the third over. Rory Haydon then produced a gem to Luke Proctor, a ball that nipped back sharply to uproot the off stump.
Further damage followed after tea. Calum McSweeney, under scoreboard pressure, was caught behind attempting a leg glance off Aitchison. Saif Zaib then flashed at a wide delivery from Haydon, giving Guest his 200th first-class dismissal for the county – a milestone moment for the wicketkeeper-batter.
Northants’ Resistance Mounts, But Challenge Remains Immense
Despite the setbacks, Calvin Harrison (42*) and James Sales (33*) showed resilience to guide Northamptonshire to 98 for 4 at stumps. They faced disciplined spells from Zak Chappell, whose probing line nearly brought a breakthrough when Sales was dropped on 11, and England prospect Shoaib Bashir, who bowled six tidy overs for just 10 runs.
While Harrison and Sales provided a glimmer of hope, Northamptonshire still face a monumental task over the final two days to avoid defeat. With Derbyshire in complete control, the pressure continues to mount on the visitors as they fight for survival in this Division Two encounter.
One thing is certain: Guest’s long-awaited century has not only reignited his season but also placed Derbyshire firmly in the driver’s seat.
