The Fallout: Dasun Shanaka Faces PSL Ban
In a significant disciplinary move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka will be ineligible to participate in the 2027 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The decision follows an investigation into the player’s abrupt withdrawal from his contractual obligations with the Lahore Qalandars.
The Nature of the Breach
According to an official statement released by the PCB, the decision was reached after a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding Shanaka’s departure. The board determined that the all-rounder had withdrawn from the tournament unilaterally, which constituted a clear and direct breach of both the Player Registration terms and the governing Tripartite Agreement.
Shanaka, who had been secured by the Lahore Qalandars during the player auction for approximately USD 27,000, opted to leave the franchise just before the start of the season. His decision was driven by an offer to join the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as an injury replacement for Sam Curran. The move, which promised a salary of approximately USD 214,000, marked his return to the IPL circuit after a three-year hiatus, though he has yet to make an appearance for the franchise.
A Pattern of Disciplinary Action
The sanction against Shanaka follows a trend of stricter enforcement by the PCB regarding player commitments. This is not the first instance of a player being sidelined for prioritizing other leagues over the PSL. Notably, Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani was handed a two-season ban after choosing to link up with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) instead of honoring his deal with Islamabad United. While Muzarabani’s representatives have publicly criticized that sanction as being ‘incredibly excessive,’ the PCB remains firm in its stance to protect the integrity of its player agreements.
Furthermore, Shanaka joins a growing list of players to face such penalties, including South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch, who was barred from playing in the current season due to his decision to shift focus toward the IPL.
Shanaka’s Apology and Mitigation
Despite the severity of the ruling, it is understood that Shanaka’s cooperation played a role in the final outcome. Reports indicate that the player received a reduced sanction specifically because he issued a formal, public apology for his actions.
In the statement released by the PCB, Shanaka expressed deep regret: ‘I deeply regret my decision to withdraw from the PSL and offer my sincere apologies to the people of Pakistan, the fans of PSL, and the wider cricket community. The PSL is a prestigious tournament, and I fully understand the disappointment caused by my actions. To the loyal fans of Lahore Qalandars, I am truly sorry for letting you down.’
He further clarified his intent at the time of the departure, stating, ‘I must clarify that at the time I withdrew from the PSL I had no intention of joining any other tournament. I have the greatest respect for Pakistani fans and have always enjoyed my time in Pakistan. I hope to return to the PSL in the future with renewed dedication and the trust of the fans.’
Looking Ahead
The situation serves as a stark reminder to players regarding the binding nature of franchise cricket contracts. As the global cricket calendar becomes increasingly congested, boards are becoming more vigilant in ensuring that contractual commitments are honored. For Dasun Shanaka, the focus will now shift to regaining the trust of the PCB and the franchise owners as he navigates the remainder of his professional career outside of the PSL landscape for the coming year.
