KSCA Expresses Disappointment as BCCI Shifts IPL 2026 Final to Ahmedabad
A Major Shift in IPL 2026 Venue Strategy
The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has been a spectacle, with the 19th edition of the world’s premier T20 tournament nearing its business end. As the league stages cross the 50-match threshold, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the governing council have finally unveiled the roadmap for the playoffs and the highly anticipated championship final. However, the announcement has sparked significant controversy, particularly in Karnataka.
While initial reports suggested that the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), would have the privilege of hosting the final at their fortress, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the BCCI has opted for a different route. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has been selected to host the final, a decision that has left the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) feeling slighted.
The KSCA’s Official Stance
The KSCA, led by its president and legendary Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad, did not shy away from expressing its deep disappointment. Prasad had been in active dialogue with the BCCI, formally conveying the association’s absolute readiness and immense interest in hosting the high-stakes playoff fixtures. The association remains proud of the operational success of the matches held in Bengaluru thus far, citing superior crowd management and a seamless spectator experience.
In an official statement, the KSCA noted: “At the outset, KSCA expresses its disappointment that the IPL Playoff matches have been allotted to other centres. KSCA President and legendary Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad was personally in touch with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in this regard and had also formally conveyed KSCA’s preparedness, willingness, and keen interest in hosting the IPL Playoffs at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.”
The statement continued, highlighting their pride in recent event management: “The IPL matches conducted in Bengaluru during the current season were widely appreciated for their smooth execution, crowd management, operational efficiency, and overall spectator experience, reaffirming KSCA’s capability to successfully host marquee fixtures of such scale and importance.”
Understanding the BCCI’s Logistics
Despite the frustration, the KSCA has opted to remain professional, acknowledging the BCCI’s authority. “Despite our preparedness and willingness to host the Playoffs, we understand that the BCCI has taken a decision to allot these matches to other venues. While the specific reasons for the same have not been formally communicated to KSCA, we fully respect the prerogative and decision-making authority of the BCCI in this regard,” the association concluded.
The BCCI has indicated that for the 2026 season, the playoffs will be staged across three distinct locations: Dharamshala, New Chandigarh (Mullanpur), and Ahmedabad. This “special case” distribution is being attributed to various logistical and operational factors that the board deems necessary for the tournament’s overall success.
Playoff Schedule Breakdown
With the dust settling on the venue selection, the cricketing world now looks toward the following schedule:
- Qualifier 1: Set to be held at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, this clash will feature the top two teams from the points table. The winner earns an immediate ticket to the final.
- Eliminator: The Mullanpur stadium in New Chandigarh will host this high-pressure match between the third and fourth-ranked teams.
- Qualifier 2: Also taking place in New Chandigarh, this match will see the winner of the Eliminator take on the loser of Qualifier 1.
- The Final: The culmination of the 19th edition will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Looking Ahead
The league phase is rapidly reaching its conclusion, with the final group-stage encounter between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) scheduled for May 24, just two days before Qualifier 1 begins. As teams scramble for their spots in the top four, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if the chosen venues provide the level of excitement expected from an IPL finale. Meanwhile, the off-field narrative remains dominated by the conversation surrounding venue selection and the expectations of state associations.
