A New Chapter for Indian Cricket: The Rise of Nandani Sharma

The landscape of Indian women’s cricket is set for a fresh injection of energy as the national selectors have officially confirmed the inclusion of young sensation Nandani Sharma in the squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Following an extraordinary breakout season in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Sharma’s call-up marks the culmination of months of intense scouting and remarkable domestic growth.

The Confidence of Jemimah Rodrigues

Jemimah Rodrigues, who had the unique opportunity to captain Sharma during their time together at the Delhi Capitals, remains the young pacer’s biggest advocate. Speaking at an event hosted by the International Institute of Sports and Management (IISM) in Mumbai, Rodrigues highlighted the composure that Sharma displayed under the bright lights of the WPL.

“Nandani has been a great player for us throughout the WPL,” Rodrigues remarked. “When we drafted her, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. While we knew the talent was there, seeing her deliver on the big stage—not just in one standout game, but with remarkable consistency across every fixture—was truly impressive. I am looking forward to having her in the national setup. The experience within this Indian team will serve to mentor her and help bring out the best of her abilities.”

A WPL Stardom Story

Sharma’s ascent has been nothing short of cinematic. In just her second professional outing, she stunned spectators and opponents alike by securing a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul. This momentum did not fade; she finished her inaugural WPL season with 17 wickets, placing her at the top of the leaderboard as the joint-leading wicket-taker. Her ability to operate under pressure is precisely what the Indian management hopes to replicate on the world stage.

Coaching Staff and Team Preparation

India head coach Amol Muzumdar has expressed his enthusiasm for integrating the young bowler into the side. “We have been monitoring her exploits in both the WPL and the domestic circuit,” Muzumdar stated. “I am very much looking forward to working with her.”

The road to the T20 World Cup is rigorous. The team is scheduled to hold a preparatory camp at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru starting May 8. Following this, the squad will travel to the United Kingdom on May 22 to face England in a challenging three-match T20I series.

Reflecting on the tour of England, Muzumdar noted, “England is always a challenging destination, but this group is mentally prepared. We made history last year by winning the T20 series 3-2 there. The confidence is present, and the experience is there. We simply need to focus on our travel and execution.”

Navigating Injuries and Tactical Shifts

The squad announcement was necessitated by unfortunate injury setbacks, specifically the loss of all-rounder Amanjot Kaur, who faces a four to five-month layoff due to a back injury, and Kashvee Gautam, who is sidelined with a knee issue. Addressing the void left by Amanjot, Muzumdar admitted the difficulty of the situation.

“It is always tough to replace a player like Aman because she has been such a consistent performer,” Muzumdar said. “Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game. We wish her a speedy recovery. To compensate, we have bolstered our squad with the power-hitting capabilities of Bharti Fulmali and the spin-bowling versatility of Radha Yadav, alongside the injection of pace from Nandani.”

Hungry for More

With India’s historic maiden Women’s ODI World Cup victory from last year serving as a powerful catalyst, the atmosphere in the dressing room is electric. Jemimah Rodrigues emphasized that the hunger for victory has only grown. The team is not resting on its laurels; instead, they are looking to cement their legacy by conquering the 2026 T20 World Cup. With a blend of seasoned veterans and hungry newcomers like Nandani Sharma, the Indian squad appears to be in a prime position to challenge for the ultimate prize.
