The Struggle for Consistency at Wankhede

The Mumbai Indians (MI), five-time IPL champions, have found themselves in an unfamiliar and precarious position this season. After an initial victory, the team has spiraled into a slump, suffering four losses in five matches. With two of those defeats occurring at their home ground, the pressure is mounting on a franchise known for its winning culture.

Speaking after a seven-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings (PBKS), head coach Mahela Jayawardene expressed a sense of urgency but maintained a supportive stance toward the squad. He noted that the team is still searching for that elusive ‘spark’ to turn their fortunes around, particularly in the bowling department where the side has struggled to stifle opposition batters.

Deflecting Pressure from Hardik Pandya

In the wake of recent losses, much of the scrutiny has fallen on captain Hardik Pandya. However, Jayawardene was quick to defend his skipper, insisting that the burden of poor results does not lie with one individual.

“I don’t think it’s just on Hardik,” Jayawardene stated. “I think it’s on every one of us when we are not doing well. It’s not an individual. It’s pretty much on me, everyone who is involved in the management and all that to see how can we be better.”

The coach emphasized that while MI are playing competitive cricket, they are simply being outplayed by more efficient rivals. He admitted that the other teams are more clinical, benefiting from higher confidence levels following strong starts to their campaigns. Jayawardene believes that controlling specific phases of the game and finding a rhythm will be key to regaining their confidence.

Injury Woes and Forced Combinations

A significant factor in MI’s inconsistency has been a revolving door of player availability. The management has had to juggle combinations due to unexpected absences. For instance, Rohit Sharma missed the clash against PBKS due to injury, and Mitchell Santner, a late addition to the squad, was sidelined by illness. Even Hardik Pandya himself missed the match against DC due to health issues.

“I think the four games that we lost… were different kind of games and we did try some combinations and some of those combinations were forced on us because of injuries and players not [being] available,” Jayawardene explained. “We are trying to create something of what is available.”

The Jasprit Bumrah Conundrum

Perhaps the most striking aspect of MI’s struggle has been the performance of world-class pacer Jasprit Bumrah. In a surprising turn of events, Bumrah has gone wicketless in all five games of the season so far. Against PBKS, he conceded runs at an economy rate of 10.25, raising questions about his form and fitness.

Jayawardene defended Bumrah, arguing that the overall lack of pressure in the powerplay has allowed batters to take fewer risks against him. According to the coach, it isn’t a matter of individual failure, but a lack of penetration as a bowling unit across different surfaces.

Addressing concerns about Bumrah’s reduced pace, Jayawardene attributed this to workload management and a slight initial niggle. He noted that Bumrah’s speeds have been increasing over recent games and that the bowler is very comfortable. “Sometimes you need a bit of luck as well,” Jayawardene added. “I think once he starts taking wickets, might not be able to stop him doing that.”

Cautious Approach to Rohit Sharma’s Return

The team management is taking a measured approach to Rohit Sharma’s recovery. While the former captain has begun running again, the decision on his return to the playing XI will be made on a day-to-day basis. Jayawardene stressed that there is no intention to rush the veteran batter, as it is still early in the season and Rohit knows his body better than anyone else.

As Mumbai Indians strive to find their rhythm, the focus remains on improving their bowling penetration and the hope that a few wins will provide the necessary confidence boost to propel them back into contention.
