The Struggle for the Spark: Mumbai Indians’ Difficult Start
The Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League, are currently facing a precarious situation. After a promising start with a win in their opening game, the team has plummeted into a dismal streak, suffering four losses in five matches. Two of these defeats have occurred on their home turf, adding to the pressure on the team management and the squad.
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene has been vocal about the team’s quest for a search for the “spark” that typically defines MI’s dominance. While the team is playing decent cricket, Jayawardene believes the lack of clinical execution in crucial moments has been the primary differentiator between them and their opponents.
Deflecting Pressure from Hardik Pandya
In the wake of a heightened focus on Hardik Pandya’s captaincy and the team’s internal dynamics, Jayawardene was quick to defend his captain. Following a seven-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings (PBKS), the coach emphasized that the failure is a collective responsibility rather than an individual one.
“I don’t think it’s just on Hardik,” Jayawardene stated. “I think it’s on every one of us when we are not doing well… It’s pretty much on me, everyone who is involved in the management and all that to see how can we be better.”
Jayawardene noted that while the confidence of opposing teams is high due to their strong starts, MI needs to focus on controlling the phases of the game they can control to regain their rhythm and confidence through a few necessary wins.
The Impact of Injuries and Availability
According to Jayawardene, the inconsistency in MI’s performance has been exacerbated by a series of unfortunate events regarding player availability. The team has struggled to maintain a cohesive unit due to injuries and illness, forcing the management to experiment with combinations that were not their first choice.
- Rohit Sharma: Missed the PBKS match due to injury.
- Mitchell Santner: Missed the match due to illness after joining late.
- Hardik Pandya: Unavailable for the DC match due to illness.
Jayawardene admitted that some of those team combinations were “forced on us,” and while they are trying to create a winning formula with the available resources, the struggle to penetrate opposition batting lineups has remained a persistent issue.
The Bumrah Conundrum: Wicketless and Under Pressure
Perhaps the most striking aspect of MI’s bowling struggles has been the form of Jasprit Bumrah. In a shocking turn of events, Bumrah has gone wicketless in all five games of the season so far. Against Punjab Kings, his economy rate climbed to 10.25, which is atypical for the the world’s premier fast bowler.
Jayawardene defended Bumrah, suggesting that the lack of wickets is more a result of the team’s lack of pressure in the powerplay rather than a lack of skill. He believes that opposition batters are playing more cautiously against Bumrah, avoiding high-risk shots, and that once he begins taking wickets, the momentum will shift.
“I think Bumrah is bowling well – it’s just where we are not putting pressure in the powerplay,” Jayawardene explained. He also addressed the Bumrah’s reduced pace, attributing it as a result of of a workload management strategy following a slight niggle. The coach confirmed that Bumrah’s speeds are increasing and he is now feeling comfortable.
Road to Recovery for Rohit Sharma
The management is taking a cautious approach to Rohit Sharma’s return to the action. Jayawardene revealed that Rohit has started running again and the team is taking a day-to-day approach to assess his fitness.
“He knows his body better than anybody else so it’s nothing serious but at the same time we don’t want to push,” Jayawardene concluded, noting that the importance of early-season caution to avoid long-term injuries.
