Purbachal NCG Set for Major Design Changes, Multi-Sport Use

The National Cricket Ground (NCG) in Purbachal has been in the planning and development stage for quite some time. But the progress hasn’t been as fast as many had hoped. With the 2031 World Cup in mind, the Bangladesh Cricket Board wants to get this stadium ready on time. That’s why starting the work properly now has become very important.

At the moment, Tamim Iqbal is leading the BCB as the head of its ad-hoc committee. Meanwhile, Aminul Haque is serving as the State Minister for Youth and Sports. On April 18, both of them, along with other board officials and government representatives, visited the Purbachal site to inspect the progress. They also spoke to the media there.

Plans for a Multi-Sport Venue

Until now, the focus was mainly on cricket, but both Tamim and Aminul have now shared plans to make the venue more versatile. They want the stadium to also support other sports, not just cricket. Tamim also mentioned that some changes will be made to the original design, not just for the sake of change, but because they are truly needed.

Speaking to the media, Tamim said, “This is a very large property. Our goal is to include a few other sports alongside cricket if possible. That would be great for the overall sports culture. Financially, the cricket board is in a better position than many other sports bodies, so we also have a responsibility to support sports in general. The honorable minister has already suggested which sports could be included. We’ll discuss it with the designers, and if needed, we’ll also consult others. Since this is a big project, it will require significant government investment, and we’ll work closely with the National Sports Council.”

Aminul Haque also shared his thoughts, saying, “The land allocated in Purbachal will definitely have a cricket stadium, Insha’Allah. But along with that, we are also planning to make it useful for multiple sports. We have already had discussions with the BCB president, the secretary of the ministry, and other officials. From the government’s side, we will take the necessary steps very soon to ensure proper facilities for multiple sports here.”

Next Steps

The Bangladesh Cricket Board and the government are committed to completing the project on time. With the 2031 World Cup approaching, the stakes are high, but the potential benefits of a multi-sport venue in Purbachal are significant. As the project progresses, cricket fans and sports enthusiasts in general will be eagerly watching the developments, hoping that the finished product will be a world-class facility that promotes the growth of sports in Bangladesh.
