BCB Travel Expenses: 40+ Million BDT Spent on Nazmul Abedeen Fahim’s Tours

The Cost of Frequent Travels: A Deep Dive into BCB‘s Financials

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has long been a lightning rod for controversy, but recent revelations regarding the expenditure on foreign travel for board officials have sparked a fresh wave of indignation. Following the departure of Nazmul Hassan Papon in August 2024, a new era was supposed to begin. Faruque Ahmed and Nazmul Abedeen Fahim joined the board as directors nominated by the National Sports Council (NSC). While Faruque Ahmed took the helm as president, Fahim was appointed as the head of cricket operations.

The Rise and Fall of Nazmul Abedeen Fahim

Nazmul Abedeen Fahim’s tenure as a director was marked by a transition from critic to insider. Before joining the BCB, Fahim was known as one of the most vocal critics of the board’s mismanagement. However, once he entered the administration, he became a frequent flyer. His journey within the BCB began as an NSC quota director, but he later contested and won a seat in the last BCB election—an election that was later shrouded in controversy.

The instability of the board’s leadership reached a climax when an investigation by the NSC found evidence of irregularities and vote manipulation. This led to the dissolved board and the installation of an 11-member ad-hoc committee to steer the ship. But before this dissolution, Fahim’s activities as a director drew significant attention, particularly his tendency to accompany national teams on their tours.

The Numbers: 10 Tours, 4 Million BDT

According to reports published by leading media outlets, the financial details of Fahim’s travel are staggering. In roughly 20 months as a director, Fahim undertook 10 foreign tours. The timing of these trips was further scrutinized, as 9 of those tours took place within his first 10 months, with only one tour occurring in the last eight months of his tenure.

The financial breakdown of these expenses is as follows:

  • Travel Allowance (TA): Approximately 1.375 million BDT
  • Daily Allowance (DA): Approximately 2.686 million BDT
  • Total Expenditure: Around 4.06 million BDT

Furthermore, it was revealed that his daily allowance was initially set at $300, which was later increased to $400 per day. This expenditure occurred during a time when the board was under immense pressure to ensure transparency and transparency in the spending of cricket funds.

Questioning the Utility of These Trips

The most pressing question remains: what did Bangladesh cricket actually gain from these visits? The records show that Fahim’s first tour as a director was to India in September 2024. He stayed in India from September 17 to 24, receiving approximately 257,250 BDT as daily allowance for a seven-day trip. However, the tour itself was postponed by a year, meaning the trip served no immediate purpose.

He was also seen accompanying the team to the UAE series and the Women’s U-19 Asia Cup in Malaysia. While the board spent millions on these trips, the tangible benefits—be a it strategic improvements or administrative gains—remain entirely unclear.

Final Response and Current Status

When questioned by the media regarding these expenditures, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim responded via WhatsApp, stating: ‘Everything has already been said, opinions have been given. There was an attempt to create a perception, and that has happened. I have nothing new to add. But thanks for asking!‘

Nazmul Abedeen Fahim is no longer part of the BCB. The board is currently being managed by an ad-hoc committee led by Tamim Iqbal, as the organization seeks to move past these controversies and move toward a more sustainable and professional approach to sports administration.
