Jess Jonassen Stars in Yorkshire’s Historic Tier 1 Triumph

Jess Jonassen delivered a match-defining performance on her home debut, scoring 67 and taking 4 for 18 as Yorkshire secured their maiden Tier 1 victory with a commanding 70-run win over The Blaze in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at Headingley.

Chasing 281 for victory, The Blaze appeared well-placed at 126 for 1, but a dramatic collapse saw them skittled out for 210 in just 41.5 overs. Jonassen was at the heart of the turnaround, claiming crucial wickets in a seven-over spell that dismantled the visitors’ momentum.

Winfield-Hill Anchors, Jonassen Accelerates

After being inserted to bat, Yorkshire built a solid platform thanks to captain Lauren Winfield-Hill, who top-scored with a composed 90. She shared a 69-run opening stand with 16-year-old Ines Blackwell, who contributed 17 before falling to Kirstie Gordon.

Winfield-Hill then joined forces with Jonassen in a 122-run partnership for the second wicket. Jonassen, playing his first home game as an overseas signing, attacked with flair, smashing 10 fours and a straight six off Lucy Higham. He reached his fifty off just 44 balls, while Winfield-Hill’s 90 came off 57 deliveries.

At 184 for 1 in the 35th over, Yorkshire were pacing toward a 300-plus total. But a late middle-order collapse—losing five wickets for 14 runs—halted their progress. Winfield-Hill was bowled by Grace Ballinger, and Jonassen was lbw pulling at Georgia Elwiss. Gordon added to her figures by dismissing Maddie Ward.

Kalis Provides Late Firepower

Enter Sterre Kalis, who injected much-needed aggression into the innings. The Dutch batter blasted 61 off just 42 balls, including three sixes, to lift Yorkshire to a competitive 280 for 9. His whirlwind knock ensured The Blaze had a challenging target to chase.

The Blaze’s Chase Unravels

The visitors’ hopes took an early hit when England opener Tammy Beaumont, playing her first match of the season, was trapped lbw by Rachel Slater in the third over. However, Marie Kelly (56) and Kathryn Bryce (55) steadied the ship with a 126-run stand for the second wicket.

Both reached their half-centuries in successive overs—Kelly off 62 balls, Bryce in just 39. But Yorkshire struck hard and fast. Jonassen removed Bryce with a sharp off-break that was caught at cover, then had Kelly stumped in the same over. Elwiss was run out attempting a quick single, and Orla Prendergast edged behind—all within a devastating five-over spell.

Jonassen and Cooper Seal the Win

From 126 for 1, The Blaze plunged to 132 for 5. Jonassen returned to trap Sarah Bryce sweeping at midwicket, while Claudie Cooper chipped in with 3 for 31, breaking key partnerships. The Blaze never recovered, bowled out well short of the target.

This victory marks a turning point for Yorkshire, who had lost their opening two matches to Somerset and Surrey. Defeating last season’s three-time semi-finalists—and recent conquerors of champions Lancashire—adds extra weight to the result.

With Jonassen proving his class both with bat and ball, and emerging talents like Blackwell showing promise, Yorkshire’s campaign is finally gaining momentum. For fans at Headingley, it was a day to remember—a true all-round masterclass under the Yorkshire sun.
