Leaning’s Grit Keeps Sussex in the Fight
In a contest defined by resilience and hard-fought gains, Jack Leaning has emerged as the protagonist for Sussex. The former Kent and Yorkshire man, who joined the club during the winter, played a pivotal role on day three at Hove, scoring an unbeaten 72 to keep his side’s hopes of back-to-back wins in the Rothesay County Championship very much alive.
Sussex currently stand at 234 for 5, requiring another 94 runs to secure a victory over Warwickshire. The match has been a see-saw battle of attrition, with both sides fighting for every single run and wicket.
The Leaning and Hughes Recovery
The second innings began precariously for Sussex. The Warwickshire attack, led by a fierce new-ball burst from Ethan Bamber, left the home side reeling at 68 for 3. Tom Haines fell to late seam movement, edging low to second slip, while Tom Clark was caught at gully. James Coles followed shortly after, trapped leg before by Michael Booth.
With the match sliding toward a potential three-day finish for the visitors, Daniel Hughes and Jack Leaning stepped up. The pair shared a vital fourth-wicket partnership of 108 runs, stabilizing the innings and shifting the momentum back toward Sussex. Hughes was rock solid in his defensive approach, punishing anything loose to reach 83 before eventually playing on to Jordan Thompson.
Leaning, meanwhile, grew in confidence as the partnership flourished. He has remained composed under pressure, posting his first half-century for his new county. He is currently joined by Tom Price, with whom he has added 50 runs for the sixth wicket.
Warwickshire’s Resilience and the First-Innings Battle
The match wasn’t always leaning in Sussex’s favor. Earlier in the game, Warwickshire looked to extend their lead significantly. Rob Yates played a masterful innings of 90, spending over four hours in patient accumulation before a loose drive to short midwicket, induced by Tom Price, finally ended his stay. Yates’ score remains the highest in the match so far.
Sussex had managed to take three wickets in a quick burst of 23 balls during the first hour of the day, but they were thwarted by a spirited ninth-wicket stand of 64 between Michael Booth and Jordan Thompson. Booth, in particular, played with aggression, hitting eight boundaries and sending one of Henry Crocombe’s bouncers into the top tier of the pavilion. Booth fell just two runs short of a half-century, mistiming a pull off Ollie Robinson.
Key Bowling Performances
Fynn Hudson-Prentice has been a standout with the ball, finishing with 4-44. Ollie Robinson also played his part, claiming 3 for 48, which included the wickets of Kai Smith and Chris Woakes.
The Road to Victory
Sussex are facing a steep climb, having only successfully chased larger fourth-innings targets at Hove on four previous occasions. However, with Leaning remaining unbeaten and Price supporting him, the target of 94 remains within reach. The tension at Hove is palpable as both teams prepare for the final act of this grueling encounter.
- Sussex: 204 & 234/5 (Hughes 83, Leaning 72*)
- Warwickshire: 267 & 264 (Yates 90, Hudson-Prentice 4-44)
