Bangladesh Captain Mehidy Stresses Respect, Focus Ahead of New Zealand Series

Mehidy Hasan Miraz has sent a clear message ahead of Bangladesh’s upcoming ODI series against New Zealand: despite an under-strength Kiwi squad, there will be no complacency. Speaking the day before the series opener, the Bangladesh skipper emphasized that every match carries weight — both professionally and in terms of ICC ranking points.

“We cannot see New Zealand as a weak side. We will try our hardest to get the result in our favour. For professional cricketers, every game is important; the chance to earn ranking points also gives it a little more importance.”

Confidence Tempered with Caution

Having led Bangladesh to back-to-back ODI series victories, Mehidy is riding a wave of team momentum. Yet, he remains grounded, acknowledging that questions still surround his leadership. His focus is on preparation and adaptability.

“Winning the series against New Zealand would be a big achievement for us,” Mehidy said. “I think the Bangladesh team is in good shape. The last two series wins also showed that we are bonding well as a team.”

He highlighted the importance of batting resilience, noting the unpredictable nature of pitches even in favorable conditions. Referring to the recent series against Pakistan, where both teams were once bowled out cheaply, Mehidy stressed mental management over ideal conditions.

“I think it is more important how the players manage themselves on any type of wicket.”

New Zealand’s Approach: Trust the Process

On the other side, New Zealand captain Tom Latham is also at a pivotal point in his ODI journey, seeking to reestablish himself in the middle order after a recent demotion. Leading a less-experienced unit, Latham is not framing the side as a ‘rookie’ team, but rather one built on familiarity and domestic success.

“Everyone across the whole squad has played for New Zealand at some point,” Latham explained. “They know what international cricket is about. We want them to come in, back themselves, and play the way they want to play.”

His strategy is simple: let players bring their domestic game to the international stage.

“We have a blueprint and a style that we like to play with, but we want guys to come in and play the way that they’ve played for their domestic sides back home in New Zealand.”

Respecting Bangladesh’s Balanced Attack

Latham acknowledged the strength of Bangladesh’s bowling unit, particularly the experience and variety offered by seamers Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Nahid Rana, who shone in the series against Pakistan.

But he also expressed caution about the spin threat, especially given the subcontinental conditions.

“We know spin plays a part in these conditions as well,” Latham said. “Bangladesh are playing great cricket at the moment, so we’re going to be challenged.”

Series at a Crossroads for Both Leaders

This three-match series isn’t just about form or rankings — it’s a personal proving ground for both captains. For Mehidy, it’s a chance to cement his leadership legacy. For Latham, it’s an opportunity to rebuild his ODI role while guiding emerging talent.

Despite different circumstances, both leaders share a mutual respect for the game, their opponents, and the opportunity at hand. With Bangladesh aiming to build on recent success and New Zealand looking to nurture the next generation, this series promises more than just points — it could shape futures.

  • Bangladesh enters on a high after consecutive ODI wins
  • Mehidy Hasan Miraz stresses discipline and adaptability
  • New Zealand relies on domestic form despite a less-experienced squad
  • Tom Latham seeks personal and team resurgence
  • Spin and seam balance key in subcontinental conditions

As the first ball approaches, one message is clear: no side is too small, and no match too insignificant, for those who respect the sport.
