Mumbai Indians Secure Young Talent Krish Bhagat to Fill Void Left by Ankolekar
Mumbai Indians (MI) have officially announced the signing of 21-year-old Punjab seamer Krish Bhagat as a replacement for the injured Atharva Ankolekar. Joining the franchise at his base price of INR 30 lakh, Bhagat enters the squad at a critical juncture as the team seeks to turn their season around.
The Injury blow to Atharva Ankolekar
The decision comes after 25-year-old Atharva Ankolekar failed to recover in time from a knee injury sustained during the Ranji Trophy season earlier this year. His absence leaves a gap in the MI bowling own-up, and the management has opted for youth and raw pace to fill that void.
Who is Krish Bhagat?
Bhagat is not a complete stranger to the Mumbai Indians ecosystem. He has trialled with the franchise for the past two years and has even represented the Reliance team in the DY Patil T20 Cup in 2026. Furthermore, he has been serving as a support bowler for MI since the pre-season of IPL 2026, meaning he is already well-integrated into the the team’s culture and familiarity with the coaching staff.
His domestic record for Punjab provides a glimpse into his potential. Bhagat has played seven first-class games and nine List-A matches. Notably, he has claimed nine List-A wickets, with a career-best performance of 3 for 33 in December 2025. Adding to his versatility, he has also demonstrated his batting ability, scoring 51 from the No. 8 position in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Uttarakhand.
Why Bhagat was Chosen
The MI coaching staff has highlighted Bhagat’s mental fortitude and dedication. In a statement released by the franchise, they emphasized that Bhagat was selected primarily for the “work ethic” he brings to every single training session.
“Krish has consistently impressed the coaching staff with his dedication, work ethic, and the quality he brings to the the rest of the sessions and practise games that he played for Mumbai Indians,” the franchise’s statement read. “His commitment and development over the years, both in domestic and at Mumbai Indians practise sessions this season have earned him this well-deserved opportunity to transition into the main squad.”
MI’s Bowling Crisis: A Struggle for Wickets
Currently sitting ninth on the IPL 2026 points table with only one win and three defeats, Mumbai Indians are in a desperate need of a bowling catalyst. The season has been a struggle, with even their talismanic Jasprit Bumrah going wicketless in his recent outings, and the rest of the attack appearing toothless in the face of opposition batters.
Bhagat joins a seamer stable that includes Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Trent Boult, Raj Bawa, Deepak Chahar, Corbin Bosch, Ashwani Kumar, and Mohd Izhar. While the depth of their pace attack is頗多, the lack of consistency and impact has been left the team in a precarious position.
Looking Ahead
As Krish Bhagat makes his transition from a support bowler to a main squad member, all eyes will be part of the focus on whether he can provide the immediate impact needed to help MI climb the points table. For a young player, the opportunity is a chance to showcase his career-long ambition and his seasoned familiarity with the team’s setup, which could prove vital in the avantages of the high-pressure environment of the IPL.
