Mumbai Indians Seek Spark Amid Early IPL Struggles

Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are staring at an uphill battle after a dismal start to the 2026 season. Four losses in five games — including two defeats at home — have left the franchise searching for answers. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene has acknowledged the team is yet to find its spark, with inconsistent performances across all departments.

“Other Teams Are More Clinical,” Says Jayawardene

After a seven-wicket loss to Punjab Kings (PBKS), Jayawardene didn’t single out any individual for blame. Instead, he emphasized shared responsibility.

“I don’t think it’s just on Hardik, I think it’s on every one of us when we are not doing well. It’s not an individual. It’s pretty much on me, everyone who is involved in the management and all that to see how can we be better.”

Despite the poor results, Jayawardene insists MI are still competitive.

“I know we are playing good cricket. We are not taken out completely, but at the same time the other teams are much better, clinical; obviously the confidence is high as well when they have that kind of start. So we just need to control phases that we can control.”

Injuries Disrupt Team Rhythm

One major factor behind MI’s inconsistency has been player availability. Captain Hardik Pandya missed the game against Delhi Capitals due to illness, while star batter Rohit Sharma sat out the PBKS match with a niggle. Mitchell Santner, a key all-rounder, joined the squad late and then fell ill.

“The four games we lost were different kinds of games, and we tried some combinations — some forced on us because of injuries,” Jayawardene explained. “We’re trying to create something with what’s available.”

Bumrah’s Wicket Drought: A Symptom, Not the Cause

While all three units — batting, bowling, and fielding — have underperformed, the bowling has drawn particular scrutiny. Jasprit Bumrah, usually MI’s spearhead, has gone wicketless in all five matches, conceding runs at 10.25 per over against PBKS.

Has Bumrah’s form placed undue pressure on the rest? Jayawardene disagrees.

“I think Bumrah is bowling well — it’s just that we’re not putting enough pressure in the powerplay. They know they don’t need to take risks against him.”

The coach pointed to a lack of overall bowling penetration, especially on varied pitches.

“We haven’t been able to penetrate oppositions. That’s something we really have to work harder on.”

Workload Management and a Bit of Luck

Bumrah has also been operating at a slightly reduced pace, which Jayawardene attributes to managed workload following a minor injury.

“Initially, he had a slight niggle, so we wanted to build him up. Over the last few games, his speeds have gone up. He’s very comfortable.”

The coach also highlighted that luck plays a role.

“Sometimes you need a bit of luck. The other bowler takes wickets, and suddenly Bumrah gets favorable matchups. He bowled some really good balls to Shreyas Iyer — wasn’t lucky enough. Once he starts taking wickets, he might not be able to stop.”

Rohit Sharma’s Cautious Return Path

As for Rohit Sharma, the management is prioritizing long-term fitness.

“Ro started running yesterday. We’re taking it day by day to see how he feels. He knows his body better than anyone. It’s nothing serious, but we don’t want to rush — it’s still early season.”

With the season still in its early stages, MI have time to rebuild momentum. But as Jayawardene stressed, it will take collective improvement — not heroics — to reclaim their winning identity.
