Cricket continues to be a game of uncertainty, with players constantly battling for their place in the playing XI. This is particularly evident in the current Bangladesh ODI squad, where several talented cricketers are vying for a spot.
Soumya Sarkar, a seasoned midfielder, has been stuck in a rut lately, despite being part of the squad. On the other hand, Nurul Hasan Sohan and Jaker Ali Anik have been unable to break through to the middle order and are currently omitted from the squad.
However, the ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz has come out in support of these players, assuring that they will not be treated unfairly. Miraz believes that before bringing Soumya back into the XI, Saif Hassan should be given a bit more time to prove himself.
Saif Hassan showcased his potential by scoring a century in a recent practice match, strengthening his case for inclusion in the playing XI. Miraz has emphasized the importance of providing adequate opportunities for players to perform. As the captain, he wants each player to get enough chances in their role to figure things out and develop their skills.
Speaking specifically about the opening pair, Miraz has expressed confidence in the duo of Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan Tamim. He noted that form is essential in cricket and highlighted the importance of establishing a strong opening partnership. In the last series, the partnership crossed 100 runs several times, which is a significant advantage for the team when trying to set up a high scoring total.
Miraz emphasized that being an opener requires a level of resilience. He explained that being sent back early to the pavilion can be difficult for openers but sometimes small contributions can make a big difference, and that’s something that needs to be considered. Miraz highlighted the contributions of both Saif and Tamim, mentioning that if they continue to give good performances then that would continue to keep them in the teams.
Jaker Ali Anik is among the standout performers in the recent matches and Mehidy Miraz has said that players like him continue to be considered for places in Bangladesh ODI team. He has also made it clear that Sohan and Jaker are still in the team’s plans. “They were both part of the last two series. When we picked Sohan, he played six matches in a row – three against Afghanistan and three against West Indies. Jaker also got his chances, but at that time his form wasn’t great. Still, both of them are in our 20-player pool. It’s not like they are out of the ODI setup. They will get opportunities again.”
The captain wants these players to stay connected with the national setup and not lose touch. He explained that as a team’s performance is largely dependent on the batting lineup and therefore providing regular opportunities for players like Soumya, Jaker and Sohan to perform is essential.
Mirza also wants the team to play consistently and this can only be achieved if the batsmen maintain a long-term approach & that approach needs time to come true.
