Mumbai Indians Adjust Tactics Amid Key Absences Against Punjab Kings
Mumbai Indians faced a selection headache ahead of their IPL 2025 showdown against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, with captain Rohit Sharma notably absent due to what appeared to be a lingering hamstring issue picked up during their previous match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
With the injury still under assessment, skipper Hardik Pandya confirmed that the team would re-evaluate Rohit’s availability in the coming games, leaving MI to regroup without one of their most experienced leaders on the field.
De Kock Returns as MI Shuffle the Order
In a move that brought some stability, veteran wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock was recalled to the playing XI, slotting in at the top of the order. De Kock’s return provided much-needed experience, especially with young guns like Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir also featuring in the lineup.
Hardik Pandya, leading the side in Rohit’s absence, won the toss but had no control over Punjab Kings’ decision. Their captain, Shreyas Iyer, showed confidence in his side’s recent form and opted to bowl first on a pitch known for favoring chasing teams at Wankhede.
Santner Out, Rawat In for MI
Another blow came in the form of left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner, who was ruled out due to illness. With Santner unavailable, Mumbai made a strategic overseas player swap, bringing in debutant Mayank Rawat — an off-spin allrounder from Delhi.
Rawat, though not a dominant force in the domestic circuit, brought balance with a batting strike rate of 123 across 11 matches. However, his bowling output has been limited, having bowled under 1.5 overs per match on average. His inclusion signaled MI’s intent to maintain flexibility, especially with the Impact Player rule in play.
Sherfane Rutherford found his way into the starting XI, while young Afghan left-arm pacer AM Ghazanfar was named as the likely Impact sub for the bowling-heavy second half of the innings.
Boult Also Missing as Bowling Depth Tested
The absence of Trent Boult — both from the playing XI and the bench — raised further questions about MI’s bowling depth. With Boult sidelined, the responsibility fell heavily on Jasprit Bumrah and the seam-bowling duo of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur to deliver under pressure.
Punjab Stick to Winning Formula
On the other hand, Punjab Kings showed no intention of rocking the boat. Riding a wave of momentum, they retained their winning combination with no changes to their squad. Their lineup featured a solid top order with Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and the consistent Shashank Singh, backed by the power-hitting of Marcus Stoinis and all-round threat of Marco Jansen.
With Yuzvendra Chahal leading the spin department and Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett handling pace duties, PBKS looked well-balanced and confident. A win here would propel them to the top of the points table — a testament to their improving consistency.
Final Thoughts
Facing multiple absences, Mumbai Indians entered this contest at a disadvantage, both in experience and balance. Yet, opportunities arose for newcomers like Mayank Rawat and Ryan Rickelton to step up under the bright lights of the Wankhede.
With Punjab Kings playing with momentum and clarity, the pressure was on MI to adapt quickly — not just in strategy, but in spirit. Cricket, after all, is as much about resilience as it is about talent.
