Tamim Iqbal Urges Swift Progress on Purbachal National Cricket Ground Project

The National Cricket Ground (NCG) in Purbachal has been under construction for quite some time now. However, the progress has not been as fast as expected. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wants to get this stadium ready with the 2031 World Cup in mind.

Tamim Iqbal, serving as the president of the BCB’s ad-hoc committee, along with Aminul Haque, the State Minister for Youth and Sports, and other board officials and government representatives, visited Purbachal to inspect the progress of the stadium.

Tamim Stresses Importance of Starting Work ASAP

Speaking to the media, Tamim stressed the importance of starting the work as soon as possible. He said, “The most important thing right now is to actually begin the work. We’ve been talking about it for a long time, but haven’t started yet. Now we’ve received clear instructions from the minister, and we need to move forward quickly.”

Aminul Haque Shares Thoughts on the Project

Aminul Haque also shared his thoughts, saying, “We have the Asia Cup in 2027 and we are co-hosting the ODI World Cup in 2031. Keeping those in mind, we are planning for the cricket board to take the lead initially. The government will also support as needed. We want to move forward in a proper, planned way. There shouldn’t be any more delays or unnecessary drama around this project.”

Addressing Concerns Over Project Cost

There were also questions about the reported cost of 800 million taka for the project. Responding to that, Tamim said, “I don’t think that figure is accurate. Also, since the honorable minister visited today, we presented the full design to him. Some changes are necessary, and those will be made—but only where they truly matter.”

Upcoming Cricket Events in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is set to co-host the 2031 ODI World Cup alongside India. Before that, the country will also host the 2027 Asia Cup and the 2027 ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup.
