Disciplinary Action Taken Against Rajasthan Royals Management
In a move to maintain the strict integrity of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has imposed a significant fine of INR 1 lakh on Rajasthan Royals (RR) manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder. The penalty comes as a result of a breach of the Players’ and Match Officials’ Area (PMOA) protocols, highlighting the league’s zero-tolerance policy toward communication lapses in restricted zones.
The incident occurred during the high-stakes IPL 2026 encounter between the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, held on April 10 in Guwahati. Bhinder, who is a well-known figure within the franchise and is popularly referred to as “Romi,” was observed using his mobile phone while positioned in the team’s dugout area, a direct violation of the established guidelines set by the league.
Understanding the PMOA Protocol Breach
The PMOA protocols are designed to ensure that the sporting environment remains secure and free from unauthorized external influences. According to the official IPL guidelines for 2026, there is a clear distinction between where team officials can and cannot use electronic devices. The specific clause regarding the team manager states:
- Dressing Room: The team manager is permitted to use a mobile phone.
- Dugout: The use of a mobile phone is strictly prohibited.
By using his device in the dugout, Bhinder acted in contravention of Article 4.1.1 of the IPL PMOA protocols. The ACU takes these regulations seriously to prevent any potential leak of team strategy or unauthorized communication during the heat of the match.
The Evidence and the Aftermath
The breach did not go unnoticed. The incident came to light following the match against RCB, when images began circulating on social media. These photographs clearly showed Bhinder on his phone, with 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi standing beside him. This public evidence prompted an immediate investigation by the ACU.
During the subsequent inquiry, it was revealed that Bhinder’s role extends beyond management; he also serves as the “local guardian” for the young Sooryavanshi during the IPL season. This personal responsibility may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the phone usage, though it does not exempt the official from the rules.
Bhinder’s Defense and the ACU’s Verdict
In his response to the ACU, Ravinder Singh Bhinder did not contest the charges. He admitted to the offence and offered an unconditional apology, maintaining that the breach was entirely inadvertent. Adding a poignant layer to his defense, Bhinder, who has been a loyal pillar of the Rajasthan Royals since the inception of the league in 2008, cited that he has been ailing from Type 2 lung failure.
The ACU, taking into account his long-standing tenure with the franchise, his honest admission of the mistake, and his current health struggles, decided to opt for a monetary penalty rather than a more severe suspension. However, the BCCI emphasized that the rules must be followed by all, regardless of seniority. A formal media release stated that Bhinder has been “warned to exercise greater care in the future and to adhere strictly to the established guidelines.”
Rajasthan Royals’ Current Standing
Despite this off-field administrative hiccup, the Rajasthan Royals continue to be one of the most formidable forces in the IPL 2026 season. The team is currently occupying third place on the points table, showcasing a strong start to their campaign. With four wins out of five games, RR is well-positioned for a deep run into the playoffs, provided they maintain their momentum on the pitch and keep their off-field operations in line with the BCCI’s stringent regulations.
This incident serves as a reminder to all team officials and support staff that the ACU remains vigilant, and the PMOA guidelines are non-negotiable components of the tournament’s operational framework.
